Geological Resources and Geological Engineering (081800)
Geological Resources and Geological Engineering is the discipline of geological resources exploration, evaluation, development and utilization. The discipline involves two major areas of resources and the environment which are closely related to sustainable social and economic development. The development of geological resources and geological engineering not only provides the most basic material conditions for the development of the social productive forces but the work to be done in advance in industrial and agricultural construction. Thus, the discipline is closely related to social development and human survival and it takes a very important position in national economic construction. It is a subject full of development potential.
The research object of Geological Resources and Geological Engineering is the geologic body, including: the formation of mineral resources and its geological background, conditions of mineralization and the formation mechanism, rules of distribution, economic and technical characteristics, theory of evaluation of mineral exploration and system of technical methods, theory method and technique for mineral resources evaluation, engineering survey, design and construction relating to the engineering geologic body; methods and techniques; theories and methods of prevention and control of geological disasters; geophysical response, processing and interpretation techniques of the observed geological body; the theories, methods and techniques of geo-information collection, analysis, processing and exploitation.
Geological Resources and Geological Engineering disciplines have four basic research areas. They take all kinds of geological bodies as the research objects, but the research contents and research methods have different emphases, each has its own characteristics. Among them, “Mineral Resource Prospecting and Exploration” focuses on the theories and methods of exploration and exploitation on mineral resource; “Geological Engineering” focuses on the theories and methods of exploration, evaluation, planning, design, construction, monitoring the Engineering geologic bodies and their technology and equipment; as for “The Exploration of Geophysics”, we use its theory and methods in mineral resources and geological engineering exploration. Through field data acquisition and processing, we can interpret and estimate different geologic bodies. It is, therefore, an important and indispensable technique of this discipline. “Geo-Information Technology” lays emphasis on the theory, method and application of collection, storage, processing, analysis, integration and how to exploit and use them.
The Geological Resources and Geological Engineering discipline in our university is characterized by the geophysical research and information technology in the process of petroleum exploration and development. Its history can be traced back to the establishment of the two subjects: “Petroleum Geology and Exploration” and “Geophysical Exploration” in 1954. Under the guidance of the former Soviet Union experts, we started to recruit graduate students. After the establishment of the degree system in China, two master's disciplines of “Petroleum Geology and Exploration” and “Applied Geophysics” were established in 1981. In 1986 two doctoral disciplines of Coal, Oil and Gas Geology and Exploration and Applied Geophysics were established. In 1998, our discipline, Geological Resources and Geological Engineering, was approved to be a doctoral station of first-class discipline, which covered three disciplines, i.e. Mineral Resource Prospecting and Exploration, Geo-Information Technology and Geological Engineering. In 2000, the Energy Resources and Environmental Geochemistry and Resource information Management were approved as the doctoral station of second-class level disciplines. In 2002 Mineral Exploration was approved to be the national key second class level disciplines.
In the sphere of Geological Engineering in our university, we have great teaching resources and perfect scientific research conditions. A series of laboratories have been set up, namely “State Key Lab of Petroleum Resources & Prospecting”, “Key Laboratory for Hydrocarbon Accumulation Mechanism, Ministry of Education”, “Key Laboratory of Earth Prospecting and Information Technology, Beijing”. These laboratories are equipped with international advanced–level experiment equipment and analytical instruments and computer software, which provide good conditions for learning or researches for the students.
The target is to train high-level science and technology personnel who can adapt to social development of our country and meet the needs of the development of modern science and technology, of internationalization of oil industry and of all-round development.

The students are required to cultivate the qualities of dedication to science and Motherland, to abide by laws and to serve the socialist construction wholeheartedly.
Students are required to have a rigorous academic attitude, excellent scientific style, academic ethics, good innovation spirit and sense of innovation as well as good teamwork spirit.
Students should have good health and fine psychological quality.
2. Knowledge requirement
Students should know well the basic theory of Marxism, and have good foundations in mathematics, physics, chemistry and foreign language. They should also have sound knowledge in geology, geophysics and the system of deep petroleum geological exploration, geophysical exploration and development .They should be acquainted with the trend of science and technology development as well as the frontier of the discipline and be familiar with the knowledge of related subjects.
3. Capacity requirements
Students should have the ability to work independently in scientific research, technological innovation and the capability in organizing and management of a unit. They should be able to use English in reading and writing professional literatures and can carry out oral communications.

Total credits≥30, wherein the degree course credits≥17, the highest credits ≤36.
Note: Students are able to choose elective courses in other programs according to supervisor advice.

Encourage graduate students to publish academic papers and go abroad for academic activities. This is not a postgraduate degree requirement, but is the basic requirement for selection of outstanding master's degree thesis.
