Master of Environmental Management

Characteristics of the study programme:

Master’s study programme Environmental management accredited in the study field 4.3.3. Environmental management profiles the graduate as a multidisciplinary professional in the field of planning and management of sustainable development in all its aspects. It provides theoretical as well as practical knowledge of the protection of elements of the environment and influences of activities on the environment, from the economic and legislative area, mediates progressive systems of management and project development, as well as instruments of environmental marketing supplemented with subjects of working with the public.

The aim of the study programme is to prepare graduates with broad environmental and economic overview based on high-quality knowledge of disciplines following up on the protection and creation of an environment in the context of sustainable development. The task of the study programme is to provide a theoretical base, practical experience and an interdisciplinary view on the solution of environmental problems for the creation and implementation of environmental policy and its instruments in the system of public administration and in the private sector.

The study programme provides complex knowledge from an environmental, economic, institutional and legal area with an emphasis on the management, coordination and evaluation of impacts of the environment on human health. Education is interdisciplinary in all areas and studies are balanced in its share of natural scientific and socio-economic disciplines. The composition of the study programme will enable to prepare professionals for specific solutions depending on the needs of the praxis and in line with the concept of sustainable development.

The study programme directly follows up on the bachelor’s study programmes Environment and Environmental management realised at the University of Central Europe in Skalica. Graduates of the bachelor’s studies of an equal or related study programme can be accepted.

Graduate profile:

Graduates of the study programme know the system of progressive management, decision-making, coordination and control of resources, processes and relationships of organisations focused on solving the environmental problems, creation and protection of the environment under conditions of forming sustainable development of society.

Graduates:

  • Know and use systems of environmental management and environmental audit resulting from globally acknowledged documents;
  • Support the development of constructive lifestyle of citizens of urban and rural systems, have knowledge of mechanisms of influencing public opinion of people and know instruments of guiding various target groups;
  • Create and apply educational and training programmes, can simulate, form and model virtual mechanisms of behaviour of natural and humane systems and the impact of harmonic or disharmonic (pathological) influence on the environment, know methods of identification, diagnosing and management of individuals and target groups; Coordinate the activity of involved elements when dealing with problems of the environment on the regional and local level;

Graduates will work in organisations and institutions realising environmental policy and in legal business entities where they are prepared to work on various levels of management in the field of production and marketing on the environmental and economic level, as well as in organisations ensuring consulting and information services etc. They will be able to apply the gained knowledge and skills also in administrative apparatus of state and public administration and self-government, international institutions operating in Slovakia as well as abroad, in educational facilities and organisations ensuring technical infrastructure.

Annotations of mandatory subjects:

  • Technology in the environment

The subject is focused on acquiring basic information about technologies used for the elimination of harmful emissions of all states into the environment. Water treatment technologies for various use. Discharge of wastewater – sewage system, methods and processes of wastewater cleaning, types of wastewater treatment plants. Sources of harmful substances discharged to air and methods of their separation. Principles and equipment for the separation of gas and solid harmful substances, aerosols and fogs.Methods of recycling and liquidating solid waste.Dumping, incineration and pyrolysis of solid waste.Biochemical methods of liquidating solid waste – composting, methanation, etc.New trends in technologies of the environmental protection.

  • Legislation of environmental elements

As part of the instruction of the subject, students will be provided with an overview of the most important general institutes of the environmental law, overview of relevant standards of international and European law in the area of the environment as well as special sectors of environmental law according to individual thematic areas of modifying the environmental law. Students should gain the ability to work with legal texts and to apply them in the social praxis. As part of the subject, information about legal instruments will be provided with an emphasis on ensuring meeting of the requirement by active public participation and active approach of the obliged entities.

  • Economy and environment

The subject is focused on the analysis of manners and possibilities of the economic use of territory by people while emphasising the evaluation of impacts (positive, negative) of the economic activity on individual elements of the environment. From the aspect of the nature of final results of activities of individual companies and organisations, the evaluation of impacts of the economy on individual elements of the environment shall be assessed separately for production and non-production sectors. At the same time, possibilities of reducing or eliminating negative impacts on the environment will be analysed for individual sectors of the economy in line with the principles of sustainable development.

  • EU environmental policy

The aim of the subject is to introduce students to tools of the environmental policy, as well as to international documents concerning environmental protection with a special focus on the development and realisation of environmental policy on the level of production organisations on the regional and local level.

  • Evaluating health effects on the population

On the theoretical level, the subject follows two main aims. The first aim is to acquaint students with basic terms of health and health condition of the population, methods and techniques of evaluating processes of population’s health condition – mortality and fatality rates. The second aim is to present students the newest standards and legislative regulations in the area of evaluating impacts on the population’s health, methods of evaluating health risks in terms of identification and classification of risks and factors of the population’s health condition. On the empirical level, the emphasis is put on the identification of differences in the population’s health condition of individual regions of Slovakia as well as on the evaluation of health risks and factors of the population’s health condition in selected regions of Slovakia.

  • Environmental marketing

The subject is focused on the mediation of knowledge concerning the possibilities of use of marketing approaches in order to increase sales of environmental and environmentally suitable products. It presents specific features of market entities behaviour in connection with the environment and the possibilities of their influencing through the use of marketing tools.

  • Accreditation, certification, and notification

Students will learn about the subject, purpose and aims of accreditation and certification processes in general, performed based on the internationally acknowledged criteria and rules stated in the STN EN 45000 standards and relevant ISO/IEC Guide regulations. They will learn to apply these when accrediting bodies of certifying entities and bodies certifying products. They will also learn about notification as a tool of conformity assessment.

  • Environmental management and audit

Students will learn about the purpose and reasons of introducing systems of environmental management pursuant to the EMAS scheme. They will understand the structure of this system and clarify individual systemic elements pursuant to relevant legislation. They will acquire practical experience with the realisation of the introductory environmental study and they will be able to manage these and constantly improve these in line with the sustainable development of these systems.

  • Economy of the environment

The aim of the subject is to teach students about the development of the mutual influencing of the economy and environment. To analyse relations between the economic and environmental interests of companies.To explain economic strategies when solving problems of the environment.To acquaint students with the ensuring of environmental protection and creation on the part of the government.

  • Information and database systems of environmental studies

The subject provides an overview of information and database systems of environmental studies, and it briefly focuses on the specific terminology and on the origin and development of GIS. Emphasis is put on the graphics and attributive element of GIS, on operations with individual types of data and on data conversion. Acquired knowledge of database systems, vector and grid graphics lead to the proposal of GIS project and to the manners of presentation (data visualisation).

  • Human resources management

A prerequisite of effective functioning of the corporate and public sphere is the knowledge of modern management. The key factor in the effective functioning of all organisations qualified managers. They must have the necessary knowledge, experience and abilities so that they can perform managerial activities effectively.

  • Evaluating life quality of population

The aim of the subject is to characterise (define) the quality of life, to point out the complexity of this term that is perceived as the standard of living expressed by the way of life, lifestyle and living conditions. The aim also is to set the basic indicators that would suitably characterise individual areas (dimensions) of the quality of life – environmental, economic, social, demographic, educational and informational quality and security. At the same time, the aim is to present territorial differences in the quality of life in Slovakia through an analysis of several indicators of the quality of life.

  • Risk management

The subject is focused on the acquisition of basic information about the system of evaluating and managing risks according to the act on industrial emergencies, according to the act on chemical materials and substances as well as other legal regulations.

  • Accreditation and certification in the environment

As part of the subject, they will learn to apply these when accrediting certification bodies, certifying systems of environmental management according to ISO 14001 as well as when accrediting environmental certifiers for environmental management according to the EMAS II or EMAS III scheme. They will also master the methodological procedure of the certification of environmental management systems and auditing as a basic tool for evaluating compliance when accrediting or certifying according to the methodological guidelines of the Slovak National Accreditation Service.

  • Diploma seminar I

Diploma seminar is aimed at supporting the diploma thesis. It consists of the collection and acquisition of underlying documents on the given topic, evaluation of the current state of problem resolution, considerations, principles and rules of dealing with the given issue.

  • Environmental management in an integrated system

The subject is focused on the field of theoretical and methodological aspects of environmental management in an integrated managerial system together with the management of quality and security. Students will learn the algorithm and procedural approach to project design, implementation, maintenance and authorisation of an integrated managerial system using standardised procedures according to ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, and ISO 27001. They will master the key elements of individual managerial systems in the Deming cycle and their integration for common policy and strategy of corporate risk management. They will also learn to prepare basic documentation for IMS that is the system manual.

  • Project management

Project management focuses on the philosophy of approaching project management with a clearly set goal that must be achieved by a required deadline, with certain costs and in required quality. When formulating project and applying methods of project management it is necessary to respect the individual specific features of the organisation and the project must have clearly set specific aims, defined strategy, resources and costs needed for project realisation. The subject focuses on a set of principles, methods and techniques used for effective planning and controlling of works on the project.

  • Administrative law

Instruction focuses on the acquisition of knowledge of public administration, on its organisational composition and activity, while emphasising instruction of forms of public administration activities applied in the praxis in various areas of public administration. It specifically focuses on the relationship of public administration with legal entities and individuals as part of inspecting and making them legally liable, on the administrative definition of the status of individuals and legal entities, on legal means of protection of individuals against the illegal activity of public administration and on the European administrative law.

  • Diploma seminar II

The Diploma seminar II is aimed at supporting the passing of the state final exam. Its aim is to review the key topics of the subjects of diploma exam and to prepare for the processing of acquired documents on the topic of the diploma thesis.
