Introduction:

The global environmental and energy challenge facing current and future generations of architects and building professionals call for a deeper understanding of the principles of environmental design, and their effective application into architectural practice. However, it seems necessary to have a master course in this important area. Students on this master course will take a fresh critical look at the subject. They will learn environmental design methods which relate to the various stages of architectural design and will be able to evaluate existing buildings and design new ones following a combined bioclimatic and building occupant focused approach. The course covers both the wider contextual and sustainable approach to environmental design, and the more technical aspects of environmentally and energy conscious building design and performance.

Student admission

Graduate students of bachelor in architecture are accepted to participate in the entrance exam for the master of Energy and Architecture.

Energy and Architectural Design 1

Course Format: Six hours of practical work and one hour theoretical class per week.
Number of units: 3 unit
Inside the course, students are trained in the architectural design of climate-adapted buildings as a meaningful process based on the understanding of the natural environment constraints and resources. Theory lectures provide knowledge of climate analysis, the architectural design of bioclimatic buildings, environmental performance analyses, energy modeling and building tectonics.

Energy and Architectural Design 2

Course Format: Six hours of practical work and one hour theoretical class per week.
Number of units: 3 unit
The purpose of this exercise is to make the students understand the importance of architectural design according to energy saving in buildings and the need to design and organize it.
The design process for this course:
  • Design and documentation of energy efficient buildings with a focus on integrated energy design and renewable energy
  • Building integration of heating, cooling and ventilation systems
  • Building integration of renewable energy systems with emphasis on solar energy systems
  • Introduction to design and evaluation tools and integrated design methodology with a focus on cooperation between architects and engineers.

Energy and Urban Design

Course Format: Eight hours of practical work and one hour theoretical class per week.
Number of units: 3 unit
The objective of this studio is to hone the theoretical knowledge of the student form the first section in resolving a design problem on a Green Field site and also to apply the design principles for energy efficiency and sustainable development. However, the course objectives are:
  • To understand the need for human settlements of all classes to be sustainable
  • To focus on the nature of Indian cities and issues related to sustainability.
  • To study the role of landscape and waste management in urban areas.
  • To understand the role of administration in achieving sustainability.
Course Content (theoretical section):
  • Concepts of place and space in cities
  • Urban design terminologies and definitions
  • Methods of urban design surveys, documentation and according to energy usages
  • Cognitive mapping – contemporary and traditional
  • Space analysis
  • Determinants of energy and urban form
  • Components of urban structure and energy
  • Urban climate
Course Content (studio section):
  • Design of a small part of the city in terms of energy efficiency and sustainable principles (2 or 3 hectares).

Architecture, climate and thermal comfort

Course Format: Two hours of theoretical works per week.
Number of units: 2 unit
The aim of the course is to introduce the students to climate as an important aspect of sustainable design, to understand in depth the factors affecting comfort and creation of comfort conditions and the building physics associated with it. Aims to introduce concepts of smart and sustainable building design which relates to the respective climatic zone and to provide designers information on how to best to respond to the local climatic zones. The course provides the student with knowledge about:
  • A global challenge to sustainable development – Climate change
  • Elements of climate and analysis of climatic data
  • Climate zones and criteria for building design
  • Sustainable techniques adopted in traditional buildings
  • Human thermal comfort
  • Bioclimatic design techniques

Active and passive systems in buildings

Course Format: Two hours of theoretical works per week.
Number of units: 2 unit
Renewable energy sources such as wind, hydro, solar and biomass are gaining an increasingly important role in assisting in environmental protection and improving the security of energy supply. It is equally important in architectural design where buildings undertook about 50% of all energy usage in the most countries. This course aims at introducing the students to various forms of renewable energy sources and appropriate technologies for harnessing them for our benefit. In the other glance, the course provides the student with knowledge about passive systems in buildings such as wind chatters, double glassing windows, thermal mass and so on.

Energy simulation in building and software usage

Course Format: 3 hours of practical work and one hour theoretical class per week.
Number of units: 2 unit
Students will undertake software workshops and design application of dynamic thermal modeling, Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) modeling and day-lighting. The software used will be tailored to the various stages of the design process and will range from climate data analysis to daylighting and thermal modeling. These will be directly applied to a design studio project running in parallel to the workshops. Amongst the software used are Rhino, Grasshopper, Ladybug, Radiance, Daysim, Energy plus, Eco Tect, TAS and Autodesk CFD

Energy management in architecture

Course Format: Two hours of theoretical works per week.
Number of units: 2 unit
The course provides the student with knowledge about:
  • Energy Management
  • Introduction to Energy Efficient HVAC systems,
  • Plumbing Design, Lighting, Mechanical and Electrical Utilities.
  • Operations and Maintenance of Buildings for energy efficiency
  • Introduction to Energy Conservation Building Codes and Energy Audits
  • High Tech Systems for Energy Efficiency
  • Introduction to Building Management Systems and Intelligent Buildings
  • Management, operation, and maintenance
The course shall provide a detailed understanding of the relationship between energy management and sustainable development. The course aims to provide fundamental clarity regarding various renewable and alternative energy sources.

Heat transfer

Course Format: Two hours of theoretical works per week.
Number of units: 2 unit
This course provides an introduction to issues of physical building performance including building thermodynamics, daylighting, and solar control. The course presents the fundamentals of building science while recognizing the evolving nature of building technologies, energy efficiency, ecology, and responsible design. The course begins with a detailed explication of the thermal properties of materials, heat transfer through building assemblies, balance point temperature, solar geometry, and shading analysis.

Energy analysis in buildings

Course Format: Two hours of theoretical works per week.
Number of units: 2 unit
The main goal of the course is to build up the right attitude to the use of energy in buildings considering also all environmental consequences. Furthermore, the intention is to develop a multidisciplinary approach to the energy supply and use in new and existing buildings taking advantage of knowledge from architecture, building technology, applied thermodynamics, economics, management, and data processing. In the other hand with the expanding interest in energy-efficient building design, whole building energy simulation programs are increasingly employed in the design process to help architects and engineers determine which design strategies save energy and are cost-effective. The purpose of this course is to investigate the potential of these programs to perform whole building energy analysis, and compare the results with the actual building energy performance and also calculation and evaluation methods for profitability assessments of measures

Research methods

Course Format: Two hours of theoretical works per week.
Number of units: 2 unit
Strengthening the scientific mind of students to raise appropriate questions about architectural design and learning how to move from questions to answer in a scientific way. Including:
  • Preliminary discussion concerning the need for research in architecture and features of scientific research and the result of learning research methodology course
  • Provide a complete picture of the process of a research project
  • Introducing detailed information to acquire the information with typical style in architecture including the use of written documents and old documents and field research through observations and interviews
  • Understanding the properties and the way to write a research report
  • Architectural bibliography
  • Doing a project at the level of a graduate student during the semester is required.

Knowledge fundamental of architectural sciences in Islam

Course Format: Two hours of theoretical works per week.
Number of units: 2 unit

Thesis

Number of units: 6 unit
Students will explore advanced topics and contexts of research applicability. The topic chosen can depend on individual interests and aspirations, ranging from analytical projects to design proposals. The module will provide students with the background on research methods and advanced technical skills appropriate to their topic of choice. Dissertations can be formulated as a written thesis or as a hybrid wrote and design-project thesis.
