There are five joint Master's programmes in Energy Innovation offered at KTH through KIC InnoEnergy. All programmes are in the field of sustainable energy and give a rare combination of engineering and entrepreneurship. The programmes deliver cutting-edge knowledge in fields crucial to meeting today’s global energy challenges and enables you to study at two universities in two different European countries, receiving a double degree.

KIC InnoEnergy has created seven Master's programme joint between European top universities. Five of these programmes are partially hosted by KTH.

Energy for Smart Cities (SMCS)

The programme is ideal for graduates who are fascinated by energy technology and interested in environmental and socio-economic factors, as well as the electrical and thermo-mechanical aspects. It focuses on end-users of the electrical value chain; the citizen, the company or the city.

During your first year, electrical and mechanical engineering courses are combined with general socio-economic, but still energy-related, subjects. An integrated project is also included.

Your second year continues with a Master’s degree project and some elective courses, both general, broadening and option specific. The programme also organises a summer school to sharpen participants’ entrepreneurial skills in the energy sector. It includes soft skills such as team-building, networking, leadership, entrepreneurship and intercultural communication skills, all fuelled by interesting conversations with professionals from the energy industry, consultancy firms and municipalities.

Environomical Pathways for Sustainable Energy Systems

Sustainable energy services is one of the key issues for humanity, considering the complete environmental footprint for the services delivered. The programme starts from the concept of basic renewable energy sources (sun, wind, geothermal) and considers the pathways towards a future sustainable energy system. The curriculum rests on a strong foundation in thermal sciences, emphasising the thermodynamic tools of exergy and thermoeconomic analysis.

The programme is operated by a consortium consisting of seven universities and their associated industry partners. It offers extended industrial contacts integrated throughout the whole programme, especially as part of internships and seminars/workshops. The curriculum is jointly offered with teacher mobility for certain common lectures, but also remote teaching by specialist teachers. The programme offers modern and interactive learning material including virtual workshops which enhances the student learning process.

Each year a kick-off and a spring seminar bring together first and second year students from all partner universities. These events give the students the possibility for networking and group discussions in an international setting.

Nuclear Energy (EMINE)

As a significant contributor to energy supply security and diversity, the nuclear industry is a key component of EU energy policy. For example, the price of nuclear electricity is competitive and predictable, and carbon emissions are low and comparable with the best renewable. Nuclear energy is also a potential low-carbon substitute for fossil-fuel-based combined heat and power production.

The programme will help provide the industry, which already employs around 400,000 people in Europe, with the highly-qualified engineers required to meet the ambitious nuclear expansion plans that many countries are now drawing up. As a student, you receive the high-level technical education required to master the engineering complexities of nuclear power generation, as well as business training related to innovation issues and energy management. The programme thus helps you integrate the technical aspects of the nuclear industry with key political, economic and social issues.

The uniqueness of the programme lies in the involvement of its industrial partners. Four major players of nuclear energy, AREVA, EDF, ENDESA and Vattenfall, take active part in the master programme. The CEA is also actively involved in EMINE, thus contributing its expertise as one of the most important research centres in nuclear energy in Europe.

Renewable Energy (RENE)

Thanks to the strong partnership between universities, innovation centrers and energy companies, the programme will provide you with a holistic understanding of the renewable energy field. You will gain state-of-the-art knowledge and expertise in fundamental renewable energy disciplines covering the value chain from power generation to storage and transmission.

Mobility is a key part of the KIC InnoEnergy educational and innovation strategy. The programme offers you the opportunity to study in two top technical universities and a business school, in a friendly and multicultural environment, and the opportunity to carry out the Master's degree project through an internship at leading companies in renewable energy.

Smart Electrical Networks and Systems (SENSE)

The programme focuses on understanding, modelling and analysing the principles behind electric power generation, transmission, distribution and utilisation on a broad scale. Topics range from the design, operation, control and monitoring of individual components to national power systems in their entirety.

The programme gives you a highly relevant and advanced education within the smart grid concept. Smart power grids are the electrical power system of the future. They operate in accordance with many of the key requirements that a sustainable energy system must meet – capacity, decarbonisation, efficiency, flexibility, reliability and sustainability. Existing technologies make up the bulk of the course content, but strong emphasis is also given to novel and innovative technologies that may stimulate the evolution of existing power grids into a ‘Smart Grid’. The innovation process itself, plus the route towards new business development in the electric power area, is addressed.
