Program Description

Master in Electronic Engineering

University of Pavia

The program provides high-level education to graduate students with a bachelor in electronics, communications and other scientific disciplines. Besides traditional courses, the syllabus includes other industry-oriented courses and opportunities for exposure to most recent advances in three different tracks.

Microelectronics is intended to offer in-depth knowledge of integrated circuits and systems.

The two-year program in Microelectronics is intended to offer a challenging high-level education and a stimulating research environment to talented students who hold a Bachelor degree in technology or science of substantial quality and level. The proposed program leverages a unique peculiarity of Pavia: the townhouse's several design and research centers of international semiconductor companies which tightly collaborate with the University to train students of high profile. Most companies host students for their graduation projects and participate, in co-operation with the University, in national and European research programs. STMicroelectronics supports a Laboratory housed inside the campus. Engineers graduated from Laurea Magistralis are nowadays employees of the most important international semiconductor companies in Italy and abroad: Austriamicrosystems, Broadcom, Conexant, Elpida Memory, Huawei, International Rectifier, Marvell, Maxim, MaxLinear, Micron, National Semiconductor, Qualcomm, STMicroelectronics.

Photonics focuses on laser and optical components technologies.

The Master in Photonics is a two year (four semesters), English-taught program designed to prepare students for a challenging career in the fast-growing photonics industry or in qualified research institutions. Indeed photonic technologies are currently pervading several fields, taking up a crucial role in advanced applications dealing with communications, medicine, imaging, lighting, heavy-duty industry, biology, energy conversion, automotive, consumer and sensing. Expertise in photonics is well evaluated in a wide range of small and large companies.

The master builds on the strong background of photonics’ research carried out at the Department of Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering (ECBE), which is at the topmost international level in fields such as solid state lasers, biophotonics, silicon photonics, sensors, quantum optics and optical fiber communications. In these areas, the ECBE has several collaborations with national and international leading photonics industries, as well as research centers, and has also led to spin-off enterprises founded by faculty members.

Space Communication and Sensing is a new course combining electronic, high-frequency and remote sensing technologies with the booming world of space-related applications.

Putting men on the Moon and robots on Mars might be the most eye-catching achievements of space technology, but its real weight and potential to impact our everyday lives actually lies elsewhere and is more pervasive than we believe. The space industry offers an ever-expanding array of space products and services, which are changing the way people go about their daily lives. Examples may be cited from GPS navigation, telecoms, weather forecasting, satellite monitoring of Earth surface.

They continue to evolve in technological sophistication and capability, and their applications continue to change and adapt to the needs of the economy. Space manufacturing and service industries are the strategic high-tech sectors driving growth and innovation well beyond the space sector, delivering value across all economic areas.
