A career in Economics…is much more than you think.
Overview
The Master’s Degree in Economics, Finance, and Public Policy is a two-year graduate course (Laurea Magistrale). The course offers students the foundation for a career as a professional economist and financial expert in private and public institutions.
The course is worth 120 formative credits. It includes 10 or 11 compulsory exams (depending on the curriculum), an internship period (an on-the-job training in an organized structure such as a private company or a public institution, 6 credits), and 9 credits devoted to student’s choice activities. The final examination (which is worth 18 credits in the study plan) consists of the defense of a dissertation in front of a Committee composed of professors. The dissertation should be prepared under the guidance of a supervisor (relative). The thesis should be written at the end of the program and offers the opportunity to delve more deeply into and synthesize knowledge acquired in previous studies.
While all first-year courses of the Master’s Degree in Economics, Finance, and Public Policy are taught in Italian, starting in autumn 2018, most second-year courses will be taught in English. The dissertation can be written either in Italian or English. For most exams, international and Erasmus students may prepare for examinations and take them in English.
Curricula
The student can choose between two curricula 1) Economics and Financial Markets and 2) Economics and Public Policy.
The first choice develops expertise mainly for banking management and risk management.
The second curriculum provides the student with expert knowledge to handle and interpret the problems of government administrations and public service companies, and for elaborating and evaluating policies.
Objectives
The Master’s Degree (Laurea Magistrale) Programme EFPP provides students with thorough knowledge in two major fields of Economics, Financial Markets, and Public Policy. The EFPP program is one of the Master's courses offered by the Department of Economics and Business, recipient of the competitive funding in the recent “Bando Dipartimenti di Eccellenza” grant, awarded by the Italian ministry of education (MIUR).
The Economics and Financial Market curriculum focuses on key areas of finance, from corporate finance to quantitative finance, asset pricing, financial derivatives, and risk management. It aims at enhancing the economic reasoning and quantitative skills required to solve practical problems arising in finance. The Economics and Public Policy curriculum provides a solid foundation in quantitative methods and economic theory. Graduates will develop the ability to interpret the economic processes, apply economic principles and quantitative techniques to the analysis of economic data, and design and evaluate public policies.
The program aims to develop: language skills, with courses taught in English, soft skills such as teamwork, through group assignments in addition to classical individual study, and the ability to present and discuss specialized topics effectively. In most courses, lab sessions based on modern software will provide students with the opportunity to analyze, discuss, and solve real problems, in addition to fostering the development of practical and technical skills.
Career Opportunities
The program aims to create professionals with expertise in the main areas of economics and finance. Possible career opportunities include professions within corporations, international organizations, consulting firms, regulatory authorities as well as academic careers in the areas of economics and finance.
More specifically, the EFPP Economics and Financial Markets graduates will develop the analytical tools and institutional knowledge required to work as a financial economist. Their curriculum presents career opportunities as managers, analysts, and economists at banks, insurance companies, as well as other professions requiring strong analytical skills within consultancies and financial institutions. The Economics and Public Policy graduates will have career opportunities as advisers, researchers, and quantitative analysts in economic and financial institutions, including local or central government departments, national or international non-governmental organizations, and international institutions.
Program Structure
Students must acquire 120 ECTS-credits to complete the program. The course includes 10 or 11 compulsory exams (depending on the curriculum), an internship period (an on-the-job training in an organized structure such as a private company or a public institution, 6 credits), and 9 credits devoted to additional educational and research activities, for example, research seminars and elective courses. A the end of the course, our successful students will receive the degree on the basis of their previous performance and of a final thesis (18 credits) that offers the opportunity to delve more deeply into and synthesize the knowledge acquired in previous studies.
International Exchange Programs
The course aims to promote internationalization and students’ mobility. Supported by well-established international exchange programs such as Erasmus+ (Study and Traineeship) and Globus, an increasing number of students have been able either to study in foreign institutions with which the university has bilateral agreements or to arrange traineeships in foreign public bodies or private companies.
