MASTER IN EARLY LANGUAGE EDUCATION FOR INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION
The two-year International Master's Degree Program in Early Language Education for Intercultural Communication (120 ECTS) prepares students to teach foreign languages to children. Special emphasis is laid on early age intercultural communication competence.
The general strength of the program is generated by its didactics and methodology relying upon a balanced combination of theory and practice to be used in a future work as a teacher or educator. The program facilitates gaining a multicultural view on educational issues and sharing personal/collective experience in intercultural settings. The program prepares its students to effectively tackle challenges and possibilities arising from the globalization, as well as cultural and linguistic diversity.
The curriculum is composed of the following three study modules:
Orientation Studies (6 ECTS)
Orientation Studies include introductory courses that provide students with skills needed for starting his/her studies at the University of Eastern Finland and this particular program.
Major Studies (92 ECTS)
Major Studies include methodological studies and research seminars, as well as courses focusing on international professional communication. The studies are oriented towards theory and practice of teaching foreign languages to young learners, current pedagogical and educational issues, innovative pedagogical solutions, as well as teaching and professional practice.
Other Studies (22 ECTS)
Other Studies may include any university-level courses that serve to deepen students' expertise in the field of education and intercultural competence.
Eligible applicants must have:
- a Bachelor's (or Master's) degree in the area of education or foreign languages, or equivalent AND
- studies or work experience in the field early language education AND
- sufficient English proficiency
Minimum requirements for the language skills verified through the official language tests are as follows:
- IELTS (Academic): 6.5
- TOEFL iBT: 92
- PTE (Academic): 62
- C1 Advanced: 176
- C2 Proficiency: 176
All applicants will be assessed and placed in the rank order on the basis of the following criteria, each graded from 0 to 10:
- earlier academic performance
- motivation letter.
The candidates for scholarships are placed in the rank order on the basis of the criteria above.
Applications are submitted through the national Studyinfo portal (studyinfo.fi) by 31 January 2019. The electronic version of the application will be considered sufficient. All admitted applicants are required to submit their original educational documents for verification upon arrival in Finland.
The results of the selection will be announced to the applicants by 5 April 2019. All applicants will be informed of their acceptance/rejection by email. The successful candidates are required to accept their study place by 15 May 2019. Students selected for the programme will commence their studies in September 2019.
TUITION FEES AND SCHOLARSHIPS
