Why study the Master of Data Science
There is a significant and ongoing growth in the demand for Data Scientists globally. Data Science is an exciting new area of study that is applicable in a large number of industry sectors such as health, energy, finance, manufacturing, as well as in government. The Data Science program at The University of Queensland will be the first in Australia to offer an advanced level of computing, statistics, mathematics and business knowledge applied in industry, government, social and scientific contexts and balanced with essential attributes relevant to data science including the ethical use of data, legal considerations for data science, business communication, hands-on experience with relevant big data tools and technologies, and creative and disruptive thinking applied to complex problems. Graduates from this program will be well-equipped to tackle complex data science challenges and play a leading role in the future development of data science solutions globally.

The program will be available to students with at least a 3-year undergraduate degree with a major in computer science, IT, statistics, mathematics, engineering, or a program with substantial quantitative competencies sufficient to allow timely completion of the program. Completion of Queensland Year 12 or equivalent Mathematics B is also required.
Applicants are encouraged to provide a CV which details any experience working with data. Inclusion of a statement of interest in the Master of Data Science and the potential contribution to career development is strongly encouraged.

In order to gain entry to an academic program at UQ, you will have to demonstrate you have the appropriate level of English language skills.
To meet the UQ's English language proficiency requirements, you must demonstrate one of the following:
- a score equivalent to four semesters of Sound Achievement in Queensland Studies Authority English, English for ESL Learners or Australian or international equivalent. Less than four semesters may be considered for some programs.
- at least 6.5 overall and a minimum of 6.0 in each sub-band of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or equivalent test. Some programs have higher English proficiency requirements; see individual program requirements.
Other equivalent tests such as the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic are also accepted, and other qualifications and experience may also be considered.
Study Abroad and Incoming Exchange students are only required to meet the overall score (eg 6.5 IELTS or 87 TOEFL or 64 PTE).
International students who are accepted into full-time study in the Master of Data Science are eligible to apply for an Australian student visa.
The Australian Government has simplified the visa application process. Now, all international students apply for the Student Visa (subclass 500).
