Structure

Master C&D is the first Master Program in cooperation and development established in Italy, running continuously since 1997.

It is jointly organized (joint degree) by the University of Pavia and the Institute of Advanced Study of Pavia-IUSS and it is carried out with the significant support of three Italian NGO’s, namely CISP, COOPI, and VIS.

The Master C&D aims at training professionals in the field of international cooperation through a highly qualified academic and professional training. Students have the possibility of studying in a multidisciplinary and multiethnic environment inside one of the oldest University systems in Europe. Every academic year 30 students coming from different cultural and academic backgrounds are exposed to an intensive period of study, followed by a direct field experience. Usually, the class is composed half by Italians and half by foreigners, mostly coming from Developing Countries.

Students are prepared to work in institutions like Non-Governmental Organizations, International Organizations, Governmental Bureaus, Research Centres, other Public or Private Institutions.

The program offers a theoretical part lasting from November to June every year taking place in Pavia. It foresees more than 500 hours of classes and seminars and focuses on disciplines such as Development Economics, Methodology of Social Research, Current Development Issues, Project Management related to International Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid.
After the residential period spent in Pavia, students carry out an internship for a period of 3 to 6 months. Students intern in the field offices or headquarters of NGOs, International Organizations and Governmental Institutions and have the great opportunity of earning the first-hand experience by working side by side with professionals of Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid.
As partial fulfillment of the Master requirements, students are required to draft a thesis linked to their internship experience or treating a research issue of their interest. After the discussion of the final dissertation, students will be awarded the title of Second Level Master Degree in Cooperation and Development.
Every year the Master provides a full list of available opportunities with NGO’s from which students can choose. Beyond this, thanks to the wide network built throughout the years made by former alumni and international experts all over the world, the Master can also facilitate contact with International Organizations.
Students are supported in their choice by a tutorship in order to give each student the most suitable opportunity in relation to his/her background and professional expectations.
Throughout the whole year, the Master offers also Tutorials and prestigious Seminars held by professionals, academicians, and experts from all over the world.
At the end of the internship period, students are requested to defend a final thesis related to their field experience or on a research topic of their interest.

Local Partnerships
CDN’s main feature is that it is not just a Network! It is, most importantly, a Network of Networks: meaning that due to its specific participatory approach each pole establishes relations and collaborations with local Universities and Institutions, civil society organizations, International Organizations.
