• Level of education: Master programme
  • Type of instruction: Full-time
  • ECTS points: 120
  • Duration: 2 years
  • Language of instruction: English

Benefits of the programme

  • The program focuses on the fundamental principles behind modern-day physicist's picture of nature. Students are introduced to the course material through both classroom exploration of theoretical models of condensed matter and observation of the behaviors of condensed matter in a lab environment. The problems being studied by means of converging NBIC technologies deal with neutron and synchrotron radiation.
  • The program aims to provide professional expertise in the field of condensed-matter physics. It will enable graduates to handle research and engineering problems in various areas of physics, chemistry, biology, and material sciences.
  • Students are expected to carry out fundamental research making full use of the MEGA-Science Facilities. Accordingly, a lot of attention in the program is paid to a detailed study of the interaction of neutron and synchrotron radiation with matter.
  • Graduates of the program are experts on: the foundations of interaction of neutron and synchrotron radiation with matter (solid state matter, polymers, nature objects, nano- and heterostructures); as well as physics-mathematical apparatus, which describes the processes of generation, propagation and scattering of coherent radiation.
  • Having qualified in the program, graduates develop the necessary skills to collect, process and analyze data obtained with neutron and synchrotron stations. In addition, they acquire new methods to record and handle images, to detect different bodies and processes, and to study the fundamental properties of matter. The science degree holders are able to investigate novel functional materials with modern methods using neutron and synchrotron radiation.
  • Graduates of the program will be capable of effectively functioning as physicist-researchers, and physicist-engineers. They can be successfully employed in areas of science and technology, specifically, at MEGA-Science Centers for Neutron and Synchrotron Radiation for Condensed Matter Studies across Russia and worldwide. They can also be employed in: data processing; nano and biotechnologies; sectors of light and heavy industry; and engineering.

Key skills

• Solving research problems in the field of condensed matter physics; solving applied problems in accordance with the study profile

• Applying the fundamental branches of physics when solving research problems in the field of the study profile

• Setting up physics experiments with modern neutron reactors and synchrotron radiation sources

• Practical application of fundamental knowledge related to the physical phenomena underlying the methods of diffraction, small angle scattering and reflectometry

• Applying modern methods for the analysis of materials structure and properties, using neutrons and synchrotron radiation, using software products and information databases for solving problems related to professional activities

Career opportunities

Graduates are well-equipped to secure positions in research and production enterprises conducting R&D in the chosen professional niche. Graduates can enter academic or engineering careers or progress to postgraduate study.

Graduates are sought after for the development and operation of innovative scientific equipment in mega-science research facilities, e. g. sources of synchrotron radiation, free-electron lasers, research reactors and pulsed neutron sources; automated control and data collection systems in complex physical systems.

Key positions:

• R&D and its management in the filed of natural sciences, technical sciences and nanotechnology

• nondestructive testing

• computer simulation
