Program Description

Description

The Program, offered by the Departments of Philosophy and Law of Novosibirsk State University, is designed for students wishing to pursue graduate study in ancient Greek and Roman philosophy, literature and art. The program offers a wide range of courses in the history of ancient philosophy, the philosophy of art, the history of religions, etc., as well as reading classes in Greek and Latin. The program is administered by the Centre for Ancient Philosophy and the Classical Tradition, which for many years conducts graduate seminars in various fields of ancient philosophy and culture. Among the visitors of the Centre were John Dillon (Dublin), Luc Brisson (Paris), Dominic O'Meara (Fribourg), John Rist (Cambridge), Teun Tieleman (Utrecht), Lilian Karali (Athens), Michael Chase (Paris), Leonidas Bargeliotes (Athens), Leonid Zhmud (St Petersburg), Alexandr Podossinov (Moscow) and other internationally recognized scholars and educators.

Program goal

To offer the prospective students an excellent education in classics. The skill gained may be applied to a various field in humanities

Program requirements

Suitably qualified students are expected to complete their undergraduate studies in humanities, preferably classics or philosophy. Good command of Greek and Latin is also desirable, but not required

Language training

At the end of each term, students must demonstrate skills in languages required for independent research in their fields of expertise. Greek and Latin courses offered by the program are subdivided into two levels. Students with previous knowledge of the classical languages take Intermediate and advanced courses of Greek and Latin, while those with no previous knowledge of the classical languages will be offered intensive Beginner’s courses

All students will (1) complete required courses; (2) submit two qualifying papers, one in the history of ancient philosophy, the other in the area of their particular interest; (3) write and defend their Master’s thesis.

Dissertation

All students working on their Master theses must report on the progress of their work once per semester. The complete thesis must be a substantial project under the supervision of a faculty member. Such projects can be in any of the areas covered by the Program, including various aspects of ancient philosophy, theoretical aspects of ancient history, arts and literature. The topic is to be approved by the faculty committee. Master thesis should contain overview reflecting a shared professional erudition of the author, as well as independent research part with the student's own research results.

Note! For enrollment, you have to submit both original and notarized Russian translations of the required documents to the NSU Admission Office.
