Program Overview

The Master of Science in Aviation Safety at the University of Central Missouri is one of a kind in the nation. UCM is one of the few institutions in the World offering an advanced degree in aviation safety. The program has been offered for more than 30 years and graduates have found their careers in various aviation disciplines including but not limited to academia, aviation regulatory agencies, military/civil aviation safety boards, airlines, airport management/design, aerospace equipment manufacturers, aviation consultants, etc. The diverse backgrounds of students coming domestically and from other nations make it a complete learning experience.

The aviation safety program is offered both on campus and 100% online. Students may pursue the degree program exclusively online, on-campus, or a combination of both. The program is designed for the career development of persons with either an academic of work experience background in either aviation or safety.

Student Learning Outcomes

A graduate with a Master of Science in Aviation Safety will be able to:

  • Apply the knowledge and skills appropriate to aviation safety and aviation management.
  • Understand and use specialized knowledge in aviation safety, and aviation safety program management.
  • Have an understanding of aircraft accident causation theories and the science of aircraft accident investigation.
  • Understand the concept of airport planning and design.
  • Study the physiological and psychological human factors.
  • Enhance his/her written and spoken communication skills.
  • Gain an understanding of research methods and how they may be applied to the aviation industry.

Admission Criteria

Admissions into the Master of Science in Aviation Safety program is made on a holistic basis. It is expected that students have basic aviation/aeronautical academic and/or professional background. Students from a background other than aviation can still apply and get accepted; however, they will be required to take the following three aviation pre-requisite courses and demonstrate satisfactory performance before beginning program requirements:

  • AVIA 1020 Aeronautics
  • AVIA 1310 FAA Private Requirements
  • AVIA Airport Management

The application to graduate studies is a two-step process. Students apply online on UCM’s website and all documents/materials are submitted to the Graduate and International Student Services office as per the laid-out instructions. After an initial evaluation, the application files meeting the admission requirements for graduate studies are forwarded to the Aviation Department. The Department, after carefully examining the credentials, makes an admission decision regarding acceptance into the program.

In addition to the university’s basic graduate admission requirements, following are additional requirements for acceptance into the MS Aviation Safety program:

  • A four-year bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • A cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.70 (based on A=4.00 scale) for all undergraduate work.
  • A Statement of Purpose describing your academic/professional achievements, purpose of continuing graduate studies, and future goals. The length should be strictly between 300-500 words.
  • Two letters of recommendations. They can be academic, professional, or a combination of both.

Note: Exception to any of these requirements may only be approved by the Department Chair.
