Branch Profile

Deeper knowledge of the core disciplines of mechanical engineering creates a broad basis for creative applications in engineering and other professional growth through various forms of lifelong learning. The main emphasis in graduate education in the field of Applied Mechanics is on the readiness and ability to develop, elaborate and make practical use of modern computational and experimental approaches to solve technical problems. Graduates will be able to perform static, kinematic and dynamic analysis of mechanisms and structures, to apply fracture mechanics in the assessment of limit states of components and structures, to assess the reliability and durability of machines and temperature loading, deal with technical tasks, flow dynamics and hydro-thermodynamic systems and heat and mass transfer. They will be able to exploit and further develop computer support in the design, planning and research activities for specific applications.

Key Learning Outcomes

KNOWLEDGE

Graduates gain in-depth knowledge about the mechanics of solid bodies, strength, and elasticity. In addition to the basic areas of mechanics covered in bachelor study, students deal with questions of fracture mechanics, plasticity, evaluation of the limiting states of parts and structures, examination of the reliability and operational life of machines, analyzing thermal loading, technical flow tasks, dynamics, hydro-mechanical and thermo-mechanical systems and the transfer of heat and mass. Graduates also understand the options, conditions, and restrictions on the use of knowledge-related fields.

SKILLS

In specific applications, graduates will be able to use and further develop computer aid design, structural and research and development activities. However, the main aim is focused on the preparation and ability to develop, elaborate and practically use computerized procedures in solving technical problems. A graduate can use expertise to independently identify and creatively solve theoretical or practical problems in the field, independently solve complex problems using selected theories, concepts and methods of the field and use some of the most advanced research approaches in the field in a manner allowing to obtain new original information.

GENERAL COMPETENCIES

Graduates will be able to independently and responsibly to decide on a new or changing context or the radically changing environment, taking into account the wider social implications of decisions. By developing relationships and resources available they are able to define terms of reference for professional activities, coordinate them, and bear ultimate responsibility for their results. Graduates will be able to communicate clearly and persuasively both professionals and the wider public, their own professional opinions and use their professional knowledge, professional skills and general competence in at least one foreign language. In terms of teamwork, a student gets the ability to plan, promote and manage the use of theoretical knowledge, gaining additional industry expertise, skills and competencies of other team members.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates

A deeper understanding of fundamental disciplines of mechanical engineering creates a broad basis for creative employment in engineering. The graduate will be able to perform static, kinematic and dynamic analysis of mechanisms to apply a knowledge of fracture mechanics in the evaluation of limit states of components and structures, to assess the reliability and durability of machines, thermal stresses and solve technical tasks of flow dynamics in hydro-mechanical and thermodynamical systems. In specific applications, he/she will be able to utilize and further develop computer support in the design, especially by means of FEM. The graduate applies as a calculator engineer or researcher in engineering plants and also, after increasing the qualification in doctoral studies, as a researcher.
