Master degree courses in Modern Philology

The Department of Humanities at the University of Calabria is proud to announce the launch of a new Master of Arts Degree program which will be effective from the academic year 2015-2016. The MA in Italian Studies is one of the available curricula of the Master of Arts Degree in Modern Philology and has been specifically designed for international students.

The program aims at training future teachers and professors who wish to disseminate the Italian language and culture abroad. The course will help students acquire and consolidate their knowledge of Italian history and culture and strong linguistic skills in spoken and written Italian.

  • Fifty percent of the lessons will be held in English.
  • NO previous subject-specific qualifications and knowledge of the Italian language are required.
  • Students will attend mandatory lessons and will be supported by tutors.
  • In order to complete the program, students will have to obtain 120 credits over two years.

Credits will be obtained by attending the following mandatory courses:

Year I

  • Written Italian Language 9
  • Contemporary Italian Literature 6
  • Italian-American Literature and Culture 9
  • Didactics of Contemporary Italian 9
  • Contemporary Italian Literature 6
  • Italian Theatre and Opera 6
  • Italian Cinema 6

Year II

  • Modern and Contemporary Italian History 6
  • Italian History and Culture in the Latin Age 6
  • Italian Art History 6
  • History and Culture of Italian Magna Graecia 6
  • History of Contemporary Italian Politics 6

The elective course will allow students to obtain the remaining credits.

At the end of the program, students will have to write a dissertation on a suitable topic which relates to the subject area of the MA in Italian Studies.

A number of scholarships, which include board and accommodation in the University residences, will be awarded for one academic year to the first 30 students who enroll in the program. The students who are awarded a scholarship will have to pay a yearly tuition fee of about 1,500 Euro.
