The final exam consists of the discussion, in open session of a thesis exclusively experimental character, which brings an original contribution, prepared under the guidance of a supervisor, the thesis will be written in Italian or English.
The experimental activity contributes to the formation of a biologist with marine setting by completing the knowledge acquired during the course of studies with the aim of developing autonomy in research, critical skills in the analysis and evaluation of experimental data, as well as skills in experimental practices related to research biological applied to the sea, its resources and conservation.
During discussion of the dissertation, the student must, also, demonstrate that they have assimilated well the topics covered during the studies in order to be able to play a leading role for the activities for which it is named.
The decision of the Commission of Science will be formulated according to procedures defined in the Academic Regulations for the Course.
Skills required for access.
Students wishing to enroll in the Master of Science in Bio-Marine Ecology must be in possession of a Degree or another qualification obtained abroad and recognized as valid under current legislation.
For access to the Master of Science as well as proving the possession of curricular requirements corresponding to adequate number of credits in groups of scientific areas that will be defined in the academic regulations, and a good mastery of basic biological disciplines for preparation of the biologist who provide the essential knowledge about the organization of living beings morphological, functional and structural, as well as in English. The verification of the possession of such knowledge will be through defined in the Academic Regulations for the course.

The course of Science in Bio-Marine Ecology aims to supplement the basic knowledge, acquired through the Bachelor's degree in Biology. In particular, the course of LM aims to provide students with an advanced level of education for the exercise of a highly qualified activity in the field of the environment in all its complexity, with particular attention to the marine environment, coasts and lagoons.
The LM course reflects the research activity carried out in the departments which heads and teachers intend to allow graduates to achieve preparation and skills according to the principles of European harmonization as specified at the national level since CBUI for LM-6 class. The Tuning-based Cagliari table contains a breakdown of skills developed and confirmed for each teaching unit.
The training program includes the scope disciplines disciplinary Biodiversity and Environment, Biomedical and Biomolecular, the supplementary and complementary activities and the free choice of the student.
In detail, the curriculum is organized to provide: - a deepening of the basics of the biology of marine organisms, and understanding of the distribution and abundance of species in space and time, the effects of human activities on the strength and toughness communities; - A deepening and a complete knowledge about the ecology, with reference to the study of marine and lagoon ecosystems and theoretical principles and methodological practice essential for the monitoring of marine resources; - A deepening and completion of knowledge relating to zoology, with the description of the main marine animal groups for the classification and understanding of the mechanisms of adaptation base (morphological, functional and behavioral); - The acquisition of the fundamental concepts for the description and study of marine biodiversity and the main techniques for the conservation of biodiversity both in situ and ex situ; - The acquisition of theoretical and methodological knowledge to understand the role of reproductive strategies of marine organisms and its importance in the global ecological balance; - A discussion of the basics of botany and the acquisition of the evaluation methods of plant biodiversity and the conservation of endangered species and priority habitats; - A discussion of the basics of the physiology of marine organisms and the methodological tools to learn and interpret key evolutionary physiological mechanisms and adaptive strategies; - A deepening of hygiene basics and acquire the necessary tools for the identification of "risk factors" for human health in the environment and for the development of specific programs for their control and prevention; - A discussion of the basics of microbiology, and acquisition of theoretical and methodological knowledge of environmental microbiology to understand the role of microorganisms in natural environments; - A discussion of the basics of chemistry with the organic reactions in aqueous environment and acquisition of water pollution concepts, of their treatment, the manual for determining the chemical status of marine waters; - The acquisition of basic knowledge on marine geomorphology, physical on trim and the dynamics of the seabed, and the relationships between geomorphological features and global climate change; During teaching the students will acquire: - ability to work in a team, to work with various levels of autonomy and fit in quickly at the workplace; - Ability to use at least one European Union language besides Italian in biology and marine ecology and for the exchange of general information.
Teaching is divided into lectures and tutorials, seminars and laboratory work. In addition, a significant part of the commitment of the student teaching, distributed in the two-year course, is focused to the conduct of the internship and the final test which provides original research on issues of biology and marine ecology, in the basic scope or application. During the work of the graduate thesis he is part of a research group actively participating in the experimental work in the laboratory and in the field.
The training activities are organized so that graduates can: - perform laboratory and in the wild or in any practical activities especially dedicated to the teaching of experimental methods, to the collection and processing of data and the use of technology ; - In connection with any specific objectives, external activities such as internships in companies, public administration facilities and laboratories, as well as study periods at other Italian and European universities, including in the framework of international agreements.
The LM Course in Bio-Marine Ecology represents the ideal continuation for students after the first degree wishing to start scientific research, and prepares to undertake training courses in third level at national and international level, or to move towards vocational activities and project in the public and private sectors.
The demand for professional profiles with advanced knowledge and skills in disciplines scope Biodiversity and environment comes from three distinct sectors: - Production Systems (eg. Fishing, aquaculture, mussels, coastal tourist facilities); - Public administration; - Search (public and private institutions).

Graduates in Bio-Marine Ecology are able: - to communicate clearly with others, also in English, what was learned during the course of study, using appropriately the disciplinary lexicon; - To develop, represent and disseminate experimental data, ideas and information using computer systems; - To work in groups; - Prepare / submit research projects, to lead research groups and to present the results of research; - To support, on a solid cultural foundation, comparisons with both specialist and non-specialist, on topics, issues and ideas related to their theoretical and experimental knowledge.
These skills will be acquired in training activities related to most of the teachings and during the training period by submitting the data in the literature as an integral part of each teaching and presentation of experimental data in the context of meetings organized by their respective supervisors.
Acquisition of conscious independent judgment with respect to autonomy and responsibility of projects, autonomy and accountability structures and staff, identification of new prospects / development strategies, evaluation, interpretation and revision of literature, professional ethics, critical and responsible approach bioethical problems.
Ability to make judgments environmental quality and productive potential of marine environments as well as the environmental impact assessment, on experimental data collected in the field and / or obtained by laboratory investigations and on the basis of existing international and national legislation.
The autonomy of judgment will be carried out through the evaluation of the ability to interpret and rework, in groups or under the guidance of individual teachers, the experimental results obtained in seminars and the ability to integrate and apply the skills acquired during the design , elaboration and discussion of the dissertation.
Acquisition of appropriate skills for the development and continuous improvement of competences with regard to consultation of specialist databases, learning innovative technologies, advanced cognitive tools for the continuous updating of knowledge.
These skills will be acquired during the theoretical / practical laboratory work and field, the seminar cycles, the internship and the design process of the thesis. These skills will be evaluated through the drafting and submission of periodic reports concerning these activities.
