The Bachelor of Science includes the presentation of a thesis, written in an original manner by the student under the guidance of one or more speakers, demonstrating mastery of the subjects, the ability to work independently and a good level of ability in communication.
The thesis may consist in carrying out original research activity or in the definition of a design problem complex interdisciplinary level, which are developed under the supervision of the / of the speaker (s), even in the laboratories of the Faculty of Engineering or during an internship with external parties or at foreign universities, as part of cooperation agreements (Erasmus or other). The Master of Science in Environmental Engineering and Land Management aims to offer the student a scientific and advanced vocational training in engineering with specific skills in their interdisciplinary areas, through a broad common path in which you consolidate the knowledge considered most important for the professional who wants to form, both through educational activities characterizing guy with supplementary and complementary activities and workshops.
The educational objectives of the course of studies for obtaining the Master of Science in Engineering for the Environment and Territory, intended as roles for which prepare the student, involve the formation of a professional able to recognize, formulate and solve, even for using techniques, procedures and innovative tools, a wide range of problems characterized by a high degree of complexity, related to environment and to the territory.
In particular, after in-depth aspects of mathematical modeling with the inclusion, among the supplementary and complementary disciplines, the scientific code Numerical Analysis (MAT / 08) and the fixing of compulsory computer lab (ING-INF / 05) between the training activities referred to in Decree 270/2004, art. 10 co. 5 letter. d) training efforts aim to provide the graduate in Environmental Engineering and Land-depth knowledge of the methods of soil investigation and monitoring of the risk of pollution or polluted environments (GEO / 05 GEO / 11 and ING-IND / 28), intervention technologies for the remediation of contaminated sites (ICAR / 03, ING-IND / 29 and ING-IND / 28), as well as modeling aspects related to environmental processes and phenomena related in particular to both surface and underground waters (ICAR / 01 and GEO / 05). In addition, students will complete this preparation with the choice of an optional course in a list of courses considered most suitable for this purpose. Another mandatory laboratory will allow the masterful majoring in IAT to achieve a vocational preparation technology of geographic information systems, now indispensable tool for an engineer to take care of environment and territory.
Other specific objectives are to be recognized in the following: - care and sensitivity to environmental issues and risks of technologies, which constitute, moreover, the object of the engineer for the environment and the territory (ICAR / 01 ICAR / 03 , GEO / 05 GEO / 11, ING-IND / 28, ING-IND / 29); - Awareness of issues relating to occupational safety (ING-IND / 28); - Thorough understanding of the technical standards and safety legislation, environment and territory, along with the ability to constantly follow the evolution (ING-IND / 28, ICAR / 03 ICAR / 20, GEO / 11).
With the completion of the training activities provided for in the master's degree in curriculum IAT will acquire the capacity to conceive, plan, design and manage systems, processes, and services and / or innovative, and highly complex experiments, especially in the professional field related to selected curriculum.
Also based on the needs expressed by students of the Master of Science that the world of work, collected through specific surveys carried out by the Security Council, it is believed that, tentatively, the guidelines offered by the Master of Science in Environmental Engineering and territory may allow students to explore the following areas: - advanced design, construction / implementation and management of the works of the supply water treatment, civil and industrial waste waters, gaseous effluents, solid waste (ICAR / 03, ING -IND / 25, ING-IND / 29); - Recognition, prevention and rehabilitation of the hydro-geological phenomena, slope instability, arrangement and management of river basins, coastal regime and design and verification of defense works, study and geological-technical characterization of soils as a function of the works that will have to insist and analysis of their interactions, evaluation of the consequences of engineering interventions, and its volume (ICAR / 01 ICAR / 02 GEO / 05 ICAR / 07, ING-IND / 28); - Planning from macro-scale to micro-scale analysis of both general plans, implementation and industry (municipal urban plans, detailed plans, waste management plans, etc.), That complex programs (instruments relating to the negotiated planning, territorial integrated projects, strategic plans) with special focus on management aspects; study, evaluation, development and sustainable management of earth resources, prevention and impact reduction and environmental and social risk extractive industry (ICAR / 20, GEO / 09, ICAR / 05 ICAR / 06).
There are three curriculum of the training course: Environment, Geoengineering and Soil Protection, Planning. The training activities provided for in the first year are the same for all curriculum, that stand in the second year as reported in the Study Programme.

I - Knowledge and understanding
Graduates in Engineering for the Environment and Territory: - depth knowledge of the theoretical and scientific aspects of mathematics and other specific subjects and has the ability to use that knowledge to interpret and describe complex engineering problems or those requiring a interdisciplinary approach (MAT / 08, GEO / 11, ING-IND / 28, ICAR / 01); - Depth knowledge of the theoretical and scientific aspects of engineering, both in general and specifically in relation to engineering for the environment and for the land, which they are able to identify, formulate and solve, also using innovative, complex problems or those that require an interdisciplinary approach (GEO / 11 ICAR / 01 ICAR / 03 ICAR / 20, GEO / 05, ING-IND / 28, ING-IND / 29); - Depth knowledge of the technical standards and safety legislation, environment and land, and is able to constantly follow the evolution (ING-IND / 28, ICAR / 03 ICAR / 20); - Depth knowledge of the issues related to the characterization and monitoring of sites, hydrogeology and the analysis and prevention of landslides (GEO / 05 GEO / 11 ICAR / 01 ICAR / 02 ICAR / 03, ING-IND / 28); - Has consolidated knowledge on hygiene and safety and the environment, with specialized expertise on injury risk, emergency and safety at temporary or mobile construction sites (ING-IND / 28); - Know the main references and methodologies to treat the inclusion of issues related to the urban planning and large area in the Strategic Environmental Assessment process (ICAR / 20); - Knows the modeling aspects related to environmental processes and phenomena related in particular to the waters, both surface and groundwater; - Knows the intervention technologies for the remediation and securing of contaminated sites (ICAR / 03, ING-IND / 28, ING-IND / 29); - It is able to recognize, formulate and deal in analytical terms, and by means of techniques, procedures and instruments to date, a wide range of problems, characterized by a high degree of complexity, however, referring to well-defined areas of the engineering for the 'environment and the territory.
The knowledge and understanding will be acquired through lectures, tutorials, workshops and self-study and will be verified in the course tests, in the discussion and correction of exercises, in the design documents provided in some teachings and final examinations of professed disciplines within the indicated SSD.
Especially those listed on the first 3 points will be verified on the basis of the satisfaction of the input requirements and will be strengthened in the two-year course with its deepening as part of planned lessons.
Specific knowledge will also be developed through technical visits planned to plants or sites of interest.

The Environment and Territory Graduates in Engineering: - is able to conceive, plan, design and manage systems, complex and / or innovative processes and services (GEO / 05 ICAR / 01 ICAR / 03 ICAR / 20 ING-IND / 28); - It is able to design and manage highly complex experiments (ICAR / 03, ING-IND / 28, ING-IND / 29); - Has care and sensitivity to environmental issues and risks of technologies, which also are the subject of its activity (ICAR / 01 ICAR / 03 ICAR / 20, GEO / 05, ING-IND / 28, ING-IND / 29); - Knows how to set the drafting of a Safety Plan and Coordination (ING-IND / 28); - It is able to apply their knowledge in various fields to the solution of environmental problems which, by their nature, require a strong interdisciplinary background; - Knows how to plan and design with technical skills and tools, processes and technological and infrastructure components for the recovery, preservation and utilization of environmental and territorial resources (ICAR / 03, ING-IND / 28, ICAR / 20, GEO / 05 GEO / 09); - It is able to identify, design and manage interventions remediation and securing of contaminated sites (ICAR / 03, ING-IND / 28, ING-IND / 29).
The master also majoring in Environmental Engineering and Land will acquire specific skills in the curriculum, in particular related to: - the ability to define, design and management of the works of de-pollution of water and air, of complex systems management and treatment of solid and liquid waste and for the recovery of materials and energy from solid and liquid waste matrices (ICAR / 03, ING-IND / 25, ING-IND / 29); - Ability to analyze and design the interactions between engineering structures and the ground with the application of scientific knowledge, ability to appreciate the consequences of engineering interventions and to define the size (ICAR / 01 ICAR / 02 GEO / 05 ING-IND / 28); ability to recognize, prevent and rehabilitate instability phenomena and slope instability, as well as to design and manage interventions of arrangement of river basins and coastal defense (ICAR / 01 ICAR / 02 GEO / 05, ING-IND / 28 ); - Ability to select the technical, methodological and operational aspects and the most appropriate design choices, intended to cover the various aspects related to the geo-resources: exploration, study and evaluation of deposits of mineral raw materials; the extraction and exploitation of the same; the search for new technological applications of mineral substances; economic planning, sustainable management, prevention and impact reduction and environmental and social risk extractive industry (GEO / 09, ING-IND / 28, ING-IND / 29); - Ability to interpret and design both master plans, implementation and industry (municipal urban plans, detailed plans, waste management plans, etc.), that complex programs (instruments relating to the negotiated planning, integrated territorial projects, strategic plans) with particular focus on management aspects (ICAR / 02 ICAR / 06 ICAR / 20, GEO / 09).
The ability to apply the knowledge gained in teaching courses related to SSD indicated will be developed in particular in the exercises, in workshops, in design studies and especially in the preparation of the dissertation, even with the use of specific calculation tools. The acquisition of these skills will be tested in exams and in the discussion of the various elaborate profit of various disciplines and the final thesis defense.

Graduates in IAT has the ability to: - analyze and process the information and environmental data in an integrated manner, even if limited and incomplete, to make judgments and assessments about the complex environmental issues; - Identify, predict, analyze and evaluate the effects of engineering solutions on the social and physical environment (ICAR / 01 ICAR / 20 ICAR / 03, ING-IND / 28, GEO / 11); - Carry out risk assessments for safety and health at work, from data collection, through processing and analysis, until the formulation of an acceptability judgment (ING-IND / 28).
To this end all the teachings, and in particular those of applied nature, will accompany the theoretical training with practical exercises and project-type processing that will stimulate critical skills and students' self-development. In addition the strong interdisciplinary character of the study program and attention to the formulation of teaching programs and their complementarity will allow graduates to gain an overview of environmental issues and assess the relevant aspects. The preparation of the final thesis also will further strengthen the capacity of independent judgment of the students.
The verification of the achievement of these results will be conducted with the discussion and review of the documents, with the evidence from examinations and, in particular, the exposure of the thesis in the final test.
IV - Communication skills
Graduates in the IAT is able to: - communicate its findings and knowledge on the environmental problems and related solutions provided, the reason for its choice, to both specialist and non-specialist; - Communicate in writing and orally in English.
These skills will be developed and verified with the exams, which in general include both written and oral tests, constituting an incentive to communicate in different forms.
In addition they will also be developed through several moments of discussion and debate in the workshops and in the various opportunities to meet with representatives of the world of work (conferences or seminars, guided tours etc.).
The preparation and discussion of the dissertation are planned to verify the acquisition of the ability to present an issue, even complex, interdisciplinary, starting dall'inquadramento General and the definition of objectives, indicating the instruments used and the results achieved or achievable with some activity.
Public final presentation enables graduates to develop a capacity for synthesis in even describe complex problems to specialist and non-specialists.
It will be valued the acquisition of additional language skills, in addition to those acquired in the Bachelor's degree, through the recognition of credits for language proficiency certificates superior to the B1 level for English.
They will be encouraged by the many trips abroad Erasmus mobility agreements developed by the MC IAT and urged the drafting of the thesis in English when carried out as part of one of those periods.

Thanks to the solid and extensive training provided characterizing the graduate in IAT, he possesses the necessary tools to deepen even autonomy aspects of greatest relevance for the next business activities and to keep up to date on regulatory developments, science and technology.
To facilitate this objective, the course of studies can organize special seminars on topics of interest to an environmental engineer, also held by Visiting professor of foreign universities.
The verification of the ability to learn is contextual to competency testing during the examination papers to especially takes place at the stage of review of design documents developed independently by students.
The student mobility programs, highly developed by the MC IAT, constitute an additional opportunity for development of learning ability, under different contexts than their own.
