International Montessori Institute (IMI) offers you the principles and the practice of Montessori pedagogy for Elementary Education in cooperation with the University of Barcelona (UB). From a Montessori’s classic perspective, our aim is to contribute with a pedagogical proposal to the quality of children’s education.

Upon successful completion of the course, students receive the MA degree in Montessori Education and the certifications of Montessori Teacher/Guide from 6 to 12 years, which have international recognition, valid in any country.

International Montessori Institute (IMI) is a Montessori training centre with a primary purpose: to offer a classic and rigorous Montessori courses based on the main principles of Maria Montessori and adapted to the educational needs of nowadays.

Our trainers have been carefully selected by their diverse international experience, as well as private and public schools, in order to convey the richness of the Montessori method in different social fields.

This interesting combination of trainers makes IMI a unique meeting point in the world, which generates an inter-Montessori dialogue ensuring loyalty to the ideas and vision of Dr Maria Montessori.


General Objectives

  • Develop a Prepared Environment suitable for this stage of age.


Specific Objectives

  • To learn the core theory of Montessori education and some practical aspects.
  • To deeply understand the characteristics and the operation of the Prepared Environment suitable for the learning.
  • Learn the implementation strategies of the Montessori Method: how to design a Montessori classroom or any alternative Prepared Environment.
  • Get an interdisciplinary overview of all the curricular areas (Practical Life, Sensorial Material, Language, Mathematics, History, Biology, Geography, Music and Art)
  • Dominate the curriculum of each one of the subjects and the logical sequencing of all the activities.
  • Manipulate fluently the Montessori Materials understanding their objectives in depth and mastering the sequences of how to introduce the material or activity.
  • Stablish a learning classroom environment and helps the child to develop their executive functions.
  • Develop the role of the Montessori teacher that puts in relation the child with the Prepared Environment and help him/her to increase all his/her potentialities.
  • To understand that the constant external and internal observation is the base of Montessori Education.
  • Assume the importance of emotional education and master the skills required to promote it.
  • Know learning potentialities of the brain and neuroscientist bases that validate this pedagogical method.

Language

Language is the main focus of community life and learning.

Oral language plays an essential role in Montessori environments from the beginning and gradually, literacy is introduced naturally and spontaneously. In Montessori education, the language is intertwined with all other areas of learning.

Cosmic education

Dr Montessori was aware of the relation between life and environment, about the cosmic tasks of each element in nature. Each one, just for existing, performing a task, keeping the balance which has evolved through the years. This module includes History, Biology and Geography.

Mathematics

Maria Montessori incorporates Blaise Pascal’s concept of the “mathematical mind” and transforms it into an educational reality.

Specific materials that accompany the natural process of the mind towards mathematical abstraction.

All activities and presentations necessary to provide children with a solid mathematical foundation.

Geometry

Geometry materials let children build patrons, which is determinant for its reasoning mind.

Observation techniques

Montessori education has been developed from scientific observation of children’s nature.

The importance of training this skill on which classroom management of a Montessori prepared environment is based.


Montessori Practice
On-site:

Presentation of all Montessori materials and activities by expert trainers in each Montessori area.

The gradual development of personal Montessori albums by each student, this includes guidance, monitoring and support.

5 weeks each summer in intensive morning and afternoon schedule.

The third and final face-to-face stage also includes the final exam.


Montessori Theory
Online

Montessori’s theory with added information about general teaching theory and neuroscience. Each subject is offered by a specialized teacher in various areas of study. Continuous assessment activities to ensure students fully understand the course content.


Elements of Study

E-Learning and IT Support

We will provide you with a username and a password to access the Campus where you find the classroom forums, private chat and videos.

Montessori Topics

The contents of each module will be opened as the course advances. 24 hours available.

Webinars

Interactive video presentations with the faculty members where students can ask questions in real-time.

Bibliography

All literature necessary for the proper development of training will be provided.

2nd Phase: Montessori Theory

Online- Virtual Campus (IMI)

4 November 2019, to 31 May 2020

  • 2.1: Discover and explore the theoretical basis on which Montessori practice is based.
  • 2.2: January 14 to February 14, 2020. Online guidance, monitoring and support for developing Montessori albums.

3rd Phase: Montessori Practice II

On-Site- Campus Mundet (UB)

June 29 to July 31 2020

  • 3.1: Presentations of materials and activities in each curriculum area by our Montessori professional Guides.
  • 3.2: (Online) January 18 to February 19 2021: Online guidance, monitoring and support for developing Montessori albums.

4th Phase: Montessori Practice III

On-Site- Campus Mundet (UB)

June 28 to July 30, 2021.

  • 4.1: Week for final theory concepts.
  • 4.2: Monitored practices with Montessori materials.
  • 4.3: Delivery of Montessori Albums.
  • 4.4: Final Exam.


90 hours of observation internship, freely distributed during the course. An opportunity to experience the reality of Montessori classrooms and practice various observation techniques.

120 training supervised hours with Montessori Materials. Montessori prepared environments with all the curricular areas in the University of Barcelona classrooms.

Double Degree Training

Students who pass the course will obtain the MA degree in Montessori Elementary Education issued by the University of Barcelona and MONTESSORI Teacher/Guide “Elementary Education 6-12 level” (Workshop I and II) issued by International Montessori Institute.

Admission requirements

University qualification to obtain the master’s degree in Montessori Education (or candidates can opt to obtain a university extension diploma).
Admission for applicants not holding a degree qualification: students who are not university graduates may be admitted on these courses. These students will be eligible for a university extension course certificate
