Program Description

Gain a deep understanding of spatial planning and multidisciplinary projects. Understand and plan for spatial planning’s future effects on man and the environment.

The program consists of 60 credits and leads to a Master’s degree.


Spatial Planning as a Whole and Multidisciplinary Planning

You are here introduced to the overall context of spatial planning, its cultural heritage, and the various forms of governance in society. You are trained to work in multidisciplinary planning projects and immerse yourself thematically in the various challenges of planning, including sustainability, equality, justice, and the environment.

Understanding of Social, Spatial, and Environmental Effects

You also apply your newfound knowledge by examining the outcomes of planning in different geographic contexts. Thereby you develop an in-depth understanding of the social, spatial and environmental impact of policies and plans. The program is concluded with a Master’s thesis.

Advanced Planning of Future Spaces and Environments

With a Master's degree in spatial planning, you are qualified for work in planning contexts. In different roles, you have the competence to work with different aspects of planning, but also with critical research of its consequences.

  • Entry requirements: Bachelor’s degree (consisting of 180 higher education credits) in environmental sciences, ecology, surveying, civil engineering, traffic engineering, landscape engineers, architectural conservation, architecture, landscape architecture, spatial planning or adjacent programs. English 6.
    Specific eligibility in the English language from upper secondary school for non-Swedish students: TOEFL 575/90; IELTS 6,5 no section below 5.5, or University of Cambridge and Oxford tests.

Learning Outcome

  • be able to demonstrate broad knowledge and understanding of the interdisciplinary field to which spatial planning belongs, where social science, natural science, and technology meet and are amalgamated into spatial planning.
  • be able to demonstrate advanced knowledge of subjects, disciplines and knowledge areas applicable for solving qualified assignments and to critically examine design plans and written documents.
  • be able to demonstrate advanced knowledge of research and development issues in spatial planning.
  • be able to demonstrate advanced methodological knowledge in planning and design of the spatial environment, and of tasks included in the working field of spatial planning. in a reflective and analytical way, be able to demonstrate the ability to integrate knowledge from tested practice, subject areas and science fields that are relevant for the processing complex planning problems. Working with planning and design of the spatial environment requires the ability to tackle and evaluate situations and issues where information may be limited.
  • be able to demonstrate ability to independently and creatively identify and formulate problems related to the field of planning and design, such as social, economic, ecological, democratic and aesthetic issues, and with appropriate methods in these areas plan and conduct qualified assignments on a level that promotes development of the professional area of spatial planning.
  • be able to demonstrate the ability to communicate and argue knowledge and conclusions in the field of spatial planning with groups and actors affected or involved in spatial planning.
  • be able to demonstrate the ability to make assessments with regard to social, economic and ecological sustainability within the area of spatial planning based on tested practice and available scientific knowledge.
  • be able to demonstrate the ability to take ethical aspects into consideration when working with people, institutions, organizations, and associations which are affected by science and development in spatial planning.


Admission criteria

Method 4 Relevant degree and English proficiency.


This method intends to assess the applicant’s suitability to studies at a Master’s level in regard to the applicant’s direction of Degree of Bachelor and knowledge of English.

Selection Criteria
  • Prior higher education studies and English.
Specification of Selection Criteria

The first step of the process consists of an assessment of the relevance of the applicant’s prior field and direction from a higher education degree for the direction of the applied program.

The assessment is done in three categories: minimal relevance given the entry requirements = merit rating 0, average relevance = merit rating 0.5, high relevance = merit rating 1.

The applicant’s TOEFL – respective IELTS levels of English are finally standardized to a value between 0 and 1, where 0 is the minimal level to be qualified and 1 is the maximum level of the test.

Applicants who are exempt from demonstrating their level of English with TOEFL/IELTS levels are given a merit rating of 1. These two values are added to a collected merit rating that may vary between 0-2.
