Marketing - MSc
The world of marketing operates within an increasingly dynamic, international arena where competition has intensified and customer needs and wants change by the day. Change occurs in every aspect of the marketing environment; social, economic, political and especially technological with digital developments. Marketing has focused on satisfying customer needs profitably but achieving ‘customer delight’ seems necessary now for commercial success.
Who is the programme for?
The programme has been developed for students seeking a career in marketing management in private, public or not-for-profit sector organisations across the globe. Our students typically go on to secure key marketing posts in international companies.
Students should possess a first degree in business with relevant content or another first degree in a related subject with appropriate relevant experience.
Students who are interested in pursuing professional qualifications can gain exemption from the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) examinations. Currently, on completion of the programme students may gain direct entry to the Postgraduate Professional Diploma in Marketing. We also have excellent links with the Institute of Direct Marketing (IDM) and are hoping to offer a route for students to sit their Certificate in Direct and Interactive Marketing.
Programme Content and Structure
The newly revised MSc programme introduces students to classic and contemporary marketing theories and concepts and applies them to real-life business cases and best industry practice.
The programme is divided into two 12-week teaching semesters that incorporate specialised marketing modules such as Marketing Strategy in an International Environment, Marketing Research Applications and Buyer Behaviour. The programme also contains core modules that provide students with key research and personal development skills. We have introduced two new modules as part of the programme revision. First; Direct and Interactive Customer Relationships that explores the use of personalised communications in a digital world. Second; Advertising and Marketing Communications Management, that looks at the creative planning and decision-making involved in campaign management.
In the remainder of the programme, you have the opportunity to explore in detail an aspect of marketing through the 15,000-word dissertation. A dissertation preparation course guides students through this key project and personal supervisors are appointed to advise on the initial proposal and will provide further guidance throughout.
Marketing offers so many different career roles and responsibilities from Advertising Executive to Database Manager; Public Relations Executive to Customer Services Manager. You should possess a high level of energy and enthusiasm for the subject along with good creative and analytical skills. Former students from the programme have taken up careers as Advertising Executives, Customer Services Manager, New Media Manager and a Direct Marketing Manager in the charity sector.
Distinctive Course Characteristics
Newcastle Business School is delighted that the MSc in Marketing has received accreditation from The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) for its Dual Award Scheme. For students on the MSc Marketing, it means that you can register for The Institute’s Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing (PG Dip) whilst studying with Newcastle Business School and instead of having to take four CIM modules, you only need to sit two examinations, usually in June. So you can leave Newcastle Business School with our Masters and a professionally recognised qualification to launch your marketing career.

So what is the Dual Award?
The CIM has recognised Newcastle Business School's MSc in Marketing and provided accreditation so our students only have to sit two out of four CIM examinations:
* Marketing Communications
* Marketing Management in Practice
The CIM exams take place twice per year in June and December and the marketing teaching team will offer you support sessions.
So what are the costs?
There are two minor costs to students. £120 for CIM student membership which provides a range of benefits including access to CIM's learning Zone resource centre, The Knowledge Hub that will help you immensely for these exams and your MSc. The second cost is for the examinations, £50 for each.
IDM Certificate Examination
The Institute of Direct Marketing (IDM) is Europe's leading body for the professional development of direct, data and digital marketing. Newcastle Business School has received great support from the IDM in the development of its direct marketing portfolio at undergraduate and postgraduate areas. The Institute has approved the Newcastle Business School MSc Marketing programme. This allows students to prepare and undertake the IDM's Certificate in Direct Marketing examination which provides an important qualification recognised by practitioners and employers in the industry.
