Study in Macau

Education in Macau
Students living in the area have the option of a subsidized school or a private school. Very few government schools are in place any longer. Most students enroll in school for about 15 years, which is compulsory and provided through the government without cost. Most schools here, though, are grammar schools, teaching just the basics of education to students. There are a few vocational schools, especially those focusing on technology, construction, and electronics.

Students attend primary and secondary education as long as they meet standard requirements. Students may not enter secondary school but may choose a vocational school instead. Then, some students move on to higher education.

Higher Education in Macau
Those students wishing to visit the area for educational opportunities will need to understand how the Macau higher education system works. Remember that this is a small location and that nearly all schools are small as well. The country has ten higher-level educational facilities. The following are the names of some of these schools.

  • University of Macau, a public school
  • Macau Polytechnic Institute, a public school
  • Macau Security Forces Training College, a public school (not a true college setting)
  • Institute for Tourism Studies, a public school
  • Macau University of Science and Technology, a private school
  • City University of Macau, a private school
  • University of Saint Joseph, a private school
  • Macau Institute of Management, a private school
  • Institute of European Studies of Macau, a private organization (not a true school)
  • Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau, a private school

Foreign students who wish to enroll in one of these schools must first begin by contacting the school directly. Each of the schools sets its own requirements for enrollment, which often focuses on the student's testing scores, location of previous education, and course study. The schools also set requirements for tuition, which range significantly based on whether or not the school is public or private.

Students can choose from a large number of educational programs available here. This includes dozens of programs in nearly all areas and courses of study. Students will be able to earn a bachelor's degree within three to four years, depending on the area of specialization. Some students move on to earn their master's degree, especially in the fields of business management, law, and healthcare. Some of the universities here offer doctoral programs as well, which can take an additional year to three years to complete.

Students who wish to enroll in one of these schools must work directly with the school to do so. The requirements differ from one school to the next and can be quite extensive in some cases.

Travel Visas for Students
In most cases, students will need to obtain a visa to study in the country. To do so, individuals must have a passport that is valid for at least six months and have an acceptance letter from the university of enrollment. They must also have a plane ticket and a transit visa, depending on location. Students also have to show proof of funds to cover their trip.

About Macau

Macau, also spelled Macao, is one of the two special administrative regions of the People's Republic of China. Macau lies on the western side of the Pearl River Delta across from Hong Kong to the east, bordered by Guangdong province to the north and facing the South China Sea to the east and south. According to The World Factbook, Macau has the second highest life expectancy in the world. In addition, Macau is one of the very few regions in Asia with a very high Human Development Index.

Exploring international educational opportunities can be an exciting time in a young adult's life. However, for some students, going to other Western countries just is not enough. For the student who is looking for ample opportunities to impress culture and lifestyle onto their lives, traveling to Macau could be the ideal choice. It is possible for students who have attained proper university-level education or completed testing otherwise to enroll in the schools here. Whether or not you wish to do so, though, depends on what you are looking for in this experience.

Macau is located in Asia and is one of two special administrative regions of China. The other location is Hong Kong. Just across from Hong Kong, Macau sits on the Pearl River Delta. Visitors to the area are plentiful and, in many ways, this is critically important because the economy of the area depends on tourism. The country was once a Portuguese colony. In fact, it was one of the last remaining European colonies in the region, having earned its freedom in 1999. This is a small country, though, with only about 11 square miles to call its own. Additionally, only about 568,000 people call it home.

Climate
The country's subtropical climate is very much present to anyone who arrives here. The humidity tends to range, on average, between 75 and 90 percent on a regular basis. Monsoons are a key component of the summer and winter seasons, too. The coolest month here is January. Temperatures then average around 58 degrees F. During the warmest month, which is July, temperatures reach about 85 degrees F on average.

Society
Tourists who visit this area find that it is a very welcoming location. The clean streets, low cost of living, and overall beautiful architecture make it a very desirable place to live, not just to study or visit. There are various cultural heritages present in the area, and numerous historically important locations to visit. The downtown area is one of the busiest areas in the city as this is where all shops, banks, and pharmacies are located. The area also has a strong presence of fashion and luxury. The area is known for its peaceful lifestyles, too.

One of the features of the country that has made it a popular tourism destination recently is the presence of the gambling industry. In fact, this has become a very strong component of the country's culture. However, this is not a dirty, worn-down gambling location. Rather, people here are known for their polite manners and overall happy attitude.

Overall, studying in Macau can be an outstanding opportunity to explore a very unique culture. It can also be a rewarding experience for those students hoping to find a new way of life in Asian culture.
