Find MSc Programs in Technology Studies 2019 in Amsterdam in Netherlands

Master of Science (MSc): These programs are postgraduate studies for people who have recently finished their undergraduate studies and want to improve their knowledge on a profound and more scientific level.

One of the greatest aspects of technology is that when it is embedded in machines and devices, most of the time the individual operating the machine or device does not need to understand the specifics of how the technology works. For example, someone using a computer does not need to understand the mechanics of the hard drive to benefit from using it.

The capital city of Netherlands, Amsterdam has well known universities such as the University of Amsterdam and Universiteitsbibliotheek Amsterdam. These educational institutions tend to provide diversified graduate and post graduate degree programs, and they have top notch Research and Development facilities.

The Master’s programme Security and Network Engineering (SNE, formerly System and Netwerk Engineering) is a time intensive one year programme at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). It allows students to specialise in Security and Network Engineering on a more theoretical level. With security as a focal point in the programme for the last thirteen years, it prepares students for realistic situations outside of academics.

Security and network engineers

In a world that increasingly uses and depends on the technical ICT infrastructure, and where (cyber)security is a rising issue, security and network engineers are indispensable in the efficient and effective functioning and innovation of this infrastructure. Their expertise in technical details and understanding of the goals and needs of organisations and society ensure the correct management of the infrastructure. ... [-]

Understanding data about human behaviour is an important and valuable skill in today's society. Companies, public institutions and governmental organizations — they all use the continuous stream of big data to describe and predict human behaviour.

Behavioural Data Science

The police use data to predict the risk of burglary by area and week of the year, insurance companies adjust their prices based on client data, and schools adjust educational programmes based on what is known about student progress.

Leveraging the full potential of these massive amounts of behavioural data towards these goals greatly benefits from a thorough understanding of data science techniques and human behaviour modelling. The master's track Behavioural Data Science aims to combine these two. The programme assumes knowledge of psychology, research methodology, and applied statistics at an undergraduate level, and continues with training on advanced (big) data techniques, academic skills, as well as practical and professional skills. ... The Information Systems (IS) track in the Master's programme Information Studies is designed to give you the tools to analyse and create systems for the supply, storage and communication of information. IS is based on intelligent communication between humans and information systems.

Information Systems is for you if:

you are interested in the ways people interact with (new) technology and media, and how they are supported, hampered and influenced by them you want to analyse systems for the supply, storage and communication of information you want to make connections between the people responsible for developing technological solutions and corporate management you want to translate user demands into innovative solutions ... Information studies is a broad and interdisciplinary field, primarily concerned with the analysis, collection, classification, manipulation, storage, retrieval and dissemination of information. It examines the interaction between people, organisations and any existing information systems, with the aim of creating, replacing, improving or understanding information systems.

Information studies tackles systemic problems first rather than individual pieces of technology within that system: it focuses on understanding information problems from the perspective of the stakeholders involved, and then applying technologies as needed. Not only aspects of computer science are incorporated, but also aspects of research fields like cognitive science, commerce, communications, management, philosophy, public policy, and the social sciences. ... In a data-rich world, data science is gaining a central position with an increasing potential value for businesses, science and society. Data scientists are needed to give meaning to the sea of data that surrounds us. With the innovative and interdisciplinary Data Science track in the Information Studies Master's Programme, the UvA makes it possible for you to become a skilful expert in this field.

This Master’s programme has been developed in collaboration with Amsterdam Data Science (ADS). Courses are taught by an international team of top scientists and experts from all collaborating institutions.

During this one-year Master’s programme in Data Science you will:

delve into the main theories and tools used in the field of data science, and develop an integrated view of the latest developments and future possibilities of Data Science in society; learn how to translate scientific, societal, and business challenges into data-related questions, identify solutions that are methodologically sound, while taking the ethical and legal aspects into account, communicate results and make well-founded decisions; work together with an international group of students from a wide variety of educational backgrounds; conduct and evaluate data science projects in a broad range of domains. Is Data Science at the UvA the study for me? ... [-]

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a field that develops intelligent algorithms and machines. Examples include self-driving cars, smart cameras, surveillance systems, robotic manufacturing, machine translations, internet searches, and product recommendations. Modern AI often involves self-learning systems that are trained on massive amounts of data ("Big Data"), and/or interacting intelligent agents that perform distributed reasoning and computation. AI connects sensors with algorithms and human-computer interfaces and extends itself into large networks of devices. AI has found numerous applications in industry, government and society, and is one of the driving forces of today's economy.

In the Master's programme Computational Science you learn to develop computational models based on observations and data from physical, social, earth, economic and life sciences. In this joint degree of UvA and VU you can specialise in topics offered by both universities.

Would you like to confront a tornado in virtual reality and predict its path of destruction? Or understand the behaviour of financial markets? What if you could simulate the outcome of a surgical procedure before it is used on a patient? Or predict how a crowd would behave in the event of a disaster?

What is Computational Science?

Computational Science seeks to explain the complex world we live in using technological simulations. By collecting data and creating computer models, computational scientists can make predictions on varying problems such as how to influence the flow of traffic, how an epidemic will spread or the probability of individuals in society becoming addicted to drugs. The curriculum relies heavily on algorithmic-driven procedures (step-by-step procedure for solving a problem in a limited number of steps) but also involves lots of mathematics and logic. Students will learn to apply this knowledge to different research areas in the natural sciences.... [-]
