The MSc programme in Sustainable Development, Management, and Policy (SDMP) invites students from diverse backgrounds to explore sustainability through a multidisciplinary lens. The programme strives to build a high level of expertise among its graduates for analyzing conditions and problems related to sustainability and for effective solution design.

Participating online, learners will cultivate professional skills from a sustainable management perspective. They will develop an understanding of the theoretical, practical and legal aspects of modern environmental practices. The increasing drive towards low carbon and sustainable solutions in the built environment has introduced a need for built environment professionals who can take a holistic view of the sustainability debate. This programme will combine the technical design and engineering issues associated with the delivery of sustainable built environments with an appreciation for how such approaches can be justified in a commercially focused world.

The programme considers passive (building fabric) and active measures (building services and renewable energy technologies) setting out what approach may be taken when considering new build or, as is becoming increasingly important the existing building stock. Students will gain the skills needed to assess these options on a whole life basis with an appreciation for how the financial and business case can be made for such approaches.... [-]

This programme is aimed at students who wish to pursue a career in agriculture and sustainable development in the private sector, research, NGO or government communities. It provides a firm grounding in research methods applicable to the study of sustainable agriculture and the intellectual tools for understanding sustainable agriculture systems. The courses combine theoretical approaches and empirically based learning from case studies of real projects and agricultural scenarios. Teaching will focus on case studies from NRI’s corporate experience of looking at how research into agricultural issues, both in the natural and social sciences, can be translated into knowledge and products that have a real impact on increasing the effectiveness of agriculture in delivering food security and enhancing livelihoods for all stakeholders. The potential role of agricultural innovations, both in technology, including biotechnology, knowledge systems, extension services and institutional partnerships in promoting development are also a strong theme in courses. The Master in Human Settlements addresses rapid urbanization in the developing world and contemporary urban transformations within the scope of sustainable development. The program aims to provide insight into the problems of human settlements as related to rapid change and to the interaction between modernity and tradition, formal and informal city-making.
