Plants form the basis of many ecosystems and will play a fundamental role in meeting the 70% increase of global food production demanded by the United Nations by the year 2050. Thus, it is essential that we learn more about how plants function, evolve and interact with their surroundings so that they can be better utilised in the development of a sustainable society. Due to habitat loss and a changing climate, we also need to increase our understanding of the mechanisms that are involved in the generation, maintenance and loss of plant biodiversity. This programme will develop your understanding of and skills about plants, dealing with subjects ranging from molecular and cellular biology to evolutionary dynamics at the species and population level. It provides a foundation for continued studies at the doctoral level but also opens doors to employment within the public sector, forestry and agricultural organisations, ecological and conservation consultancy, plant breeding and education. -

Geomatics involves the acquisition, management and analysis of phenomena with a spatial reference. The spatial analysis finds applications in many areas, such as health, environment management, natural resources assessment, urban planning, geology, archaeology and agronomy. This programme aims to provide you with knowledge in spatial analysis focusing mainly on environmental applications. Models and theories for understanding the Earth’s climate and ecosystems are integrated with knowledge for collecting environmental information using remote sensing, storing the information in databases and theories behind Geographical Information Systems (GIS). -

The Master’s programme in Mathematical Statistics provides a broad spectrum of tools and methods for handling random phenomena occurring in scientific as well as industrial contexts. Within the programme, you can specialise in many different areas such as the modelling of economical, biological and environmental data. You study at least 45 credits in mathematical statistics at the Master’s level and write a Master’s thesis of 30 credits. The remaining (at most 45) credits can be used in additional mathematical statistics courses or, for example, mathematics or numerical analysis, as well as in other subjects, for example, computer science, economics, molecular biology and bioinformatics. -

This programme connects fundamental research with its applications and integrates genetics, gene technology, cell biology, molecular biology and molecular biotechnology. The common basis is within molecular genetics, which is the discipline that explains how the information in the genes is expressed and how it can give rise to various traits in an organism. Emphasis is put on genetic mechanisms underlying disease, genetic mapping, molecular genetic techniques and diagnostic methods. Training in entrepreneurship and processes of innovation and commercialisation in the molecular biotechnology field provides a fundamental base for careers in biotechnology and the pharmaceutical industry. A majority of the graduated students continue with PhD studies, often within the biomedical research field. -

What are the attractions in dealing drugs, being a graffiti writer, or trying to rehabilitate criminals? Cultural criminology is about local cultures, subcultures and a whole range of cultural characteristics associated with crime. It aims to explain and understand how people involved in crime go about their everyday life and how they interact with others. We want to get inside the experiences of committing or controlling crime. If you are a graffiti writer, what are the thrills? What efforts are used in trying to control graffiti, and what is the cultural understanding among media and social control agents? -

Materials science is inherently multidisciplinary and often relies on both theoretical modelling and experimental characterisation. Lund hosts two of the world’s best large-scale facilities for materials science research: The world’s first 4th generation synchrotron radiation source, the MAX IV Laboratory, which started operation in 2016, and the European Spallation Source (ESS) for neutron-based research which is currently under construction (opens in 2023). Education in the Master’s programme in Physics, Materials Science is strongly linked to research at these two infrastructures. You will learn how to study important properties of materials by spectroscopy, diffraction and microscopy. The Master’s programme is flexible and interdisciplinary, and it is possible to combine theoretical or computational studies with experimental approaches. -
