In the Master in Mental Health, you combine the theory of mental disorders with practical training. You can choose from two specializations: psychopathology in adults or psychopathology in children and adolescents. After the master's, you can (if you meet the admission requirements) move on to postgraduate training in GZ psychologist or psychotherapist, or you can go into scientific research and become a Ph.D. student. But a career as a therapist, diagnostician, or advisor in (special) education is also an option. -

There are a number of professional disciplines that train students to help individuals, couples, and families who are struggling with mental health problems. Such disciplines include, but are not limited to, counseling, social work, psychology, psychiatry, and marriage and family therapy. To some extent, all members of these professional groups are trained to use talk therapy as one means of helping people work through personal problems. Beyond this similarity, there are also a number of important differences. These professional disciplines can differ a great deal in their training and licensure requirements, philosophical orientations to helping, and specific areas of expertise. On a surface level, it can be very confusing to differentiate one of these talk therapists from the next. -

Our Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program, consistently ranked among the top programs in the country by U.S. News & World Report, offers a holistic approach that blends neuroscience with psychotherapy and psychopharmacology. An advanced practice nursing degree for RNs interested in mental health care, it integrates assessment, pharmacological treatment, and therapy for a wide spectrum of patients - from children and adolescents to adults and older adults. Significant advancements have been made in recent years in our understanding of neuroscience and human behavior and the effective treatment and prevention of mental illness. Yet, despite this progress, mental health issues are often minimized, mishandled, and insufficiently treated, shrouded in fear and shame. There is a disparity in treatment across many populations, and a critical shortage of skilled mental health professionals that limits the ability of patients to get the care they so deeply need. Confounding this is a lack of diversity among health care providers who may not adequately understand cultural barriers to seeking care. This is something we are striving to change. -
