MSc Wild Animal Biology

Wild animal health has become increasingly popular amongst non-veterinarians with a first degree in zoology and biology. Recognising this, the RVC, together with the Zoological Society of London, London have developed a unique course, aimed at non-veterinary biological science graduates and leading to the MSc in Wild Animal Biology.This unique course provides practical exposure to wild animal species and an understanding of their health and welfare as well as providing training in research methodologies relevant to the study of wildlife.

This programme is aimed at students who wish to pursue a career in agriculture and sustainable development in the private sector, research, NGO or government communities. It provides a firm grounding in research methods applicable to the study of sustainable agriculture and the intellectual tools for understanding sustainable agriculture systems. The courses combine theoretical approaches and empirically based learning from case studies of real projects and agricultural scenarios. Teaching will focus on case studies from NRI’s corporate experience of looking at how research into agricultural issues, both in the natural and social sciences, can be translated into knowledge and products that have a real impact on increasing the effectiveness of agriculture in delivering food security and enhancing livelihoods for all stakeholders. The potential role of agricultural innovations, both in technology, including biotechnology, knowledge systems, extension services and institutional partnerships in promoting development are also a strong theme in courses. This programme has been designed to provide students with knowledge and understanding of key steps in the development and launch of new ingredients and products to contribute to healthy living and lifestyles. It is based on the strengths and expertise of staff working in the Faculty of Engineering and Science, e.g. human nutrition and public health; food chemistry and biochemistry, functional foods, marketing and economics; new product and process development; food packaging; food safety and quality management; food legislation; applied food microbiology, creative thinking, sustainability and entrepreneurship.

This programme is aimed at: graduates who want to develop a career path in the food industry in the area of product development, for students who have not followed an undergraduate programme in food science or technology, and for professionals working in the food industry who want to participate in the programme, either in a part-time mode or by following a continuing professional development (CPD) model. Students with backgrounds in Biology, Chemistry, Nutrition, Biotechnology and Hospitality are encouraged to join the programme.... [-]

MSc Applied Food Safety and Quality Management

This programme provides graduates with an insight into measures that are required to provide a supply of safe and wholesome food to consumers globally. A wide spectrum of food safety and quality management issues are addressed following the farm to fork approach.

Topics covered include good governance and national control systems; food inspection and testing services; legislation and private standards; and management of food safety and quality within the supply chain as well as in hotels and restaurants.

Students also acquire a knowledge of the design and management of safety and quality management systems based upon risk analysis, e.g. Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP), ISO 9001:2008 designed to meet the requirements of national and international legislation and private standards. Students sit the Royal Society for Public Health Level 3 Award in HACCP for Food Manufacturing and are also given the membership of the Institute of Food Science and Technology.... [-]

This is a multidisciplinary degree that brings together aspects of chemistry, biology and cell biology. The courses are carefully tailored to cover the knowledge in key fields such as gene therapy, drug design, genomics, proteomics, genetic engineering for plants, animals and micro-organisms, and bio-informatics. This course addresses the key issues of food control, from both the food producers and food law enforcement points of view, recognising the equally important needs of distributors, retailers and of course, consumers.
