Since the winter semester 2011/12 the Faculty of Biology has offered the Master of Science in "Cell Biology and Physiology". In the winter semester 2015/16, this was reissued as new Master of Science in "Physical Biology of Cells and Cell Interactions".

The two-year Master's program Physical Biology of Cells and Cell Interactions is research-oriented and educates students in modern concepts and methods of cell biology and physical biology. Scientific questions in the fields of cell biology and physical biology will be combined with developmental biology, cellular structure biology, bioinformatics, biochemistry, immunology, neuro-and plant physiology.

The Master's program provides students with an understanding of fundamental life processes from cell growth, cell-cell communication and differentiation to hormonal, inflammatory, angiogenic signaling and aging. These processes are studied in context of cells, individual tissues and model organisms. The experimental and conceptual approaches of the program include modern cell biological, molecular, biochemical, bioinformatical, immunological and genetic methods, combined with various microscopical techniques and applications, molecular imaging, data analysis as well as morphological and physiological technologies.... The M.Sc. in Molecular Biotechnology is a research-based study programme focused on White Biotechnology. Theoretical knowledge of chemical and biological processes (from molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, biochemistry, chemistry and analytics) will be put into practice on a molecular level and a technological basis will be established for the targeted production of biologically active molecules and production/synthesis processes that create scientific and economic added value.

Detailed insights into the function of biological macromolecules enable the development of innovative products and processes including tailor-made enzymes as well as new biomolecule-based methods of analysis, or drugs.... [-]

The goal of the Master’s study course is deepening of knowledge and specialisation in the subject Biophysics. The courses are no longer strictly oriented within the classical subject boundaries and institute but are now more topic-oriented and are offered interdisciplinarily in five areas of focus:

Spectroscopy, imaging and structural analysis Membranes, electrophysiology, bioenergetics and cell biophysics Theory, simulations and molecular dynamics Bio-analytical methods Nucleic acids

These areas of focus reflect the areas of focus of research conducted by the university lecturers on campus who represent the biophysical subject areas and attractive and future-oriented fields of research. The necessary breadth of the education is achieved in that the student must select modules from all of the areas of focus as optional compulsory subjects.... [-]

The Master program is the second part of the consecutive Bachelor/Master study in Bioinformatics. It is based on a Bachelor program in Bioinformatics and covers advanced topics from a research and application-oriented perspective.

The following four topics are obligatory:

Sequence Analysis/Data Mining, Network Analysis/Systems Biology, Structure Analysis/Molecular Modeling, and Neuroprocesses/Computational Neurobiology.

Additionally, there is the possibility to choose from more than 50 elective modules from computer science, biology, mathematics, chemistry, medicine, and biophysics, in order to specialize in one or two research directions or to learn more about the various application disciplines of Bioinformatics.Study abroad is explicitly supported. Moreover, soft-skills, for example, teaching a tutorial, advising students in a mentoring program and writing a research grant proposal will be acquired. The study finishes with a Master thesis.... The Master’s degree course in biochemistry at the Goethe Universität Frankfurt is based on a long-standing tradition in biomolecular research and education. The course aims at providing scientific knowledge and occupational skills to candidates that they may become independent researchers.

The Master’s programme includes Cellular Biochemistry, Structural Biology and Biophysics/Biophysical Chemistry and allows setting focal points depending on the student's interests. Training is arranged in close cooperation with the local research environment and includes the departments of Physics, Molecular Biology, Medicine, Max-Planck-Institute for Biophysics, Paul-Ehrlich-Institute and Georg-Speyer-Haus. The programme especially accommodates membrane proteins and structural biology, areas in which Frankfurt has a strong research tradition. Graduates will be able to make decisions that are based on rational case analysis and reflect an established scientific tradition while keeping ethic and social conditions in mind. The Natural- and Life sciences are developing very fast. Therefore it is important that the students continue to educate themselves and to integrate new knowledge throughout their subsequent careers. Our graduates are qualified to continue with a PhD or to get a job in the industry, business management or in marketing, publishing companies or business consultancies.... [-]
