The Master's programme in Forensic Science is unique in the Netherlands. The programme distinguishes itself from most international Master's programmes in Forensic Science by building on a range of scientific backgrounds and disciplines, such as computer science, physics, chemistry, biological sciences and mathematics.

The goal of the programme is to train good scientists, armed with forensic knowledge and professional skills. Do you want to make your scientific knowledge socially relevant within the context of law and order? Then you should apply for Forensic Science.

The forensic field is complex and becoming more so every day. Forensic science is the area of science that deals with the analysis of traces left behind at a (crime) scene. To reconstruct events from the past, forensic questions have to be answered using information that can be obtained from a wide variety of traces, e.g. DNA, digital traces, fingerprints, explosives, etc. The evidential value of these traces is determined by the use of statistical methods. The number of disciplines that come together, both at the crime scene and during the subsequent investigation, is widening and the competencies required are becoming ever more specialised. The need for overview and guidance of the overall process is growing proportionally.... [-]

Master in International Crimes and Criminology (MSc)

The unique Master’s program in International Crimes and Criminology teaches a small group of approximately 25 students the necessary intellectual skills to take this approach and trains them how to apply the knowledge and expertise to real-world situations.

The program in a nutshell

International Crimes and Criminology is a one-year, full-time program. It is taught fully in English. The program deals with international crimes in a broad framework. The focus is on the role of individuals, groups, states and the international community. You will gain insight into the psychology of perpetrators, get acquainted with criminological theories on organizational processes and discuss political issues in the international arena. Subjects like torture, rape, and genocide are discussed during class. This can be emotionally demanding, but our ultimate aim is to take a scientific approach to these topics in order to draft measures which might help prevent these types of crimes in the future. You learn to analyze what makes people torture (etiology), are trained how to measure and investigate these crimes (prevalence) and challenged to critically reflect on modes of transitional justice (reaction). You do so by discussing important concepts of international criminal law and applying criminological, sociological and psychological theories to international crimes. The program trains students to become both academics and professionals. After finishing the program, you will be able to objectively assess empirical data and critically comment on theoretical notions on the one hand, and draft policies, develop preventive strategies and do field work... About

The Master’s program in European Governance explores pressing concerns facing Europe today:

How do we manage flows of migrants into Europe? How can we regulate financial markets? How can Europe make the transition to a green economy and sustainable forms of energy? Will reforms to welfare states foster economic growth, and if so, how do we approach these reforms? What are the emerging patterns of intelligence sharing and law enforcement within the context of European cross-border policing? Are European countries becoming more similar and homogeneous because of the EU? Does the EU unify us as equals or undermine democracy?

These are amongst the most important questions facing Europe today. Each issue involves activities at the local, national and European level, and each requires insight into the fields of economics, law and public administration. The interdisciplinary Master’s program in European Governance will equip you with the knowledge and skills to answer these questions and to formulate appropriate responses to the challenges they pose. Our program prepares you to deal with and work within the framework of European governance – both in Brussels and at home.... [-]

There is an urgent need for scholars and professionals who are trained in interdisciplinary and integrative approaches towards sustainable development, enabling them to assess and deal with the complexity involved from a system’s perspective. This master programme will create a unique opportunity for students to specialize in sustainability science and policy, and especially in sustainability assessment, through an interdisciplinary curriculum in an international ambience....
