Our MSc in Medieval History aims to provide the skills to pursue advanced research on the fascinating history of Europe in the period between AD 400 and 1500 and offers in-depth explorations of a range of specific topics within that period. This programme will provide you with what you need to pursue advanced research in medieval history, and it will help you to expand your own research interests through small, seminar-based classes. You will also have access to world-class resources, most notably the impressive combined collections of the National Library of Scotland and of the University of Edinburgh Main Library. In addition to that, you will belong to a thriving community of scholars by becoming a member of the highly cross-disciplinary Edinburgh Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies (CMRS), which organises regular research seminars as well as a range of other academic and social events.

Philosophy, science and religion are three endeavours that shape in far-reaching and fundamental ways how we think, what we value, and how we live. Public discourse, professional life, politics and culture revolve around the philosophical, scientific and religious ideas of our age; yet they and their relationship to each other are not well understood. This programme brings together leaders in the fields of philosophy, science and theology, based both in Edinburgh and across the world. You will be brought up to date with the relevant scientific developments including quantum mechanics, relativity, cosmology, evolutionary biology, neuroscience, and human origins, the relevant theological issues including the problem of evil, miracles, theological conceptions of creation, theological conceptions of providence, and eschatology, and the philosophical tools in the philosophy of science, metaphysics, epistemology, and philosophy of language required to understand the relationship between them.

The teaching and supervision are conducted by internationally recognised researchers from our Language, Cognition & Communication Research Group. The group’s expertise covers the broad scope of psycholinguistics, as well as connections to other areas of social and cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience, and members use a wide range of experimental, observational, computational, and neuroscience methods. The group is part of one of the largest collections of natural language researchers in Europe, with links to computer scientists, linguists, and philosophers. You will take courses on the core mechanisms of human language processing, and conduct an original research dissertation in this area. You will also receive thorough training in advanced academic and research skills, including comprehensive coverage of statistical modelling and research design using the R statistical language.
