Philosophy, science and religion are three endeavours that shape in far-reaching and fundamental ways how we think, what we value, and how we live. Public discourse, professional life, politics and culture revolve around the philosophical, scientific and religious ideas of our age; yet they and their relationship to each other are not well understood. This programme brings together leaders in the fields of philosophy, science and theology, based both in Edinburgh and across the world. You will be brought up to date with the relevant scientific developments including quantum mechanics, relativity, cosmology, evolutionary biology, neuroscience, and human origins, the relevant theological issues including the problem of evil, miracles, theological conceptions of creation, theological conceptions of providence, and eschatology, and the philosophical tools in the philosophy of science, metaphysics, epistemology, and philosophy of language required to understand the relationship between them. -

This programme will give you a comprehensive understanding of the increasingly global experience of humankind in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. What has brought about the most recent past? Has the end of the Cold War created a ‘new world order’? Has 9/11 changed our world forever? Is globalisation the dominant force of our age or is there a return to nationalism? By exploring such questions critically and analytically, you have a unique opportunity to understand the present through the recent past. This programme teaches you to appreciate the distinctiveness of contemporary history, its use of sources (e.g. radio, television, film, internet-based sources, such as the ‘Wikileaks’, etc.) and its methodology. -

This programme gives you the skills to work with human skeletal remains, which are the most direct evidence of past lifeways. The scientific investigation of human skeletal remains, also known as Bioarchaeology or Physical Anthropology, gives unique insights into human history. Demographic shifts, environmental changes, migrations, the spread of diseases and the impact of violence and conflict all leave traces on the skeleton. The MSc in Human Osteoarchaeology provides students with theoretical knowledge and practical skills to understand these important skeletal biographies and interpret them in their cultural context (biocultural approach), at the individual and the population level, combining theoretical learning with hands-on practice. The programme draws on a variety of techniques, ranging from a visual examination of the whole skeleton to the biomolecular analysis of small bone samples. Students gain invaluable hands-on experience with the School's extensive Scottish skeletal collection. -
