The Master Environmental Geography focuses on the relationship between humans and their ecosystem. Environmental challenges can be approached from different perspectives, which are analysed while taking spatial dynamics into account. You will examine the consequences of environmental changes on both local and global economies and study international climate change governance.
The Master's in Environmental Geography focuses on human-ecosystem interactions and is well-placed to throw light on the daunting environmental challenges facing our planet. It could be argued that we have gone beyond the earth’s carrying capacity and are approaching planetary boundaries. Other arguments hold that human ingenuity will equip us to deal with new challenges in the future. This programme focuses on the relationship between humans and their ecosystems. This is done by taking a strong spatial perspective and researching the impact of both global and local environmental change on humans....

This Master's track combines an education in geo-ecological science with interdisciplinary skills. You will learn to apply your knowledge of earth sciences in a professional setting and are trained to tackle environmental problems while working in teams with other specialists.
Why specialise in Environmental Management?
Our environment is increasingly affected by human impact. To protect it, we need skilled professionals that can manage landscapes and geo-ecosystems for the benefit of future generations. This requires in-depth knowledge of environmental systems and the ability to work together in interdisciplinary teams and to deal with transitions in relation to global change....

The two-year track Green Life Sciences in the Biological Sciences Master’s programme is a research-oriented programme that focuses on studying plants and their interactions with the environment at the molecular level. The study programme gives you the opportunity to combine fundamental and applied training in molecular biology, chemical ecology, ecogenomics, biotechnology, plant breeding, phytopathology, pest control, cell and population biology. This enables you to develop an integrated view of the functioning of plants and to gain skills required for modern research.
Is Green Life Sciences at the UvA the study for you?
It is, if you:
are interested in how organisms function at a genetic, biochemical and cellular level and how this translates to their ecology, evolution and usage.
want to learn how plants cope with abiotic stress such as drought or high salt levels in the soil, which is an increasing problem in agriculture.
want to investigate how pathogens and plagues (insects, mites) affect the plants’ immune system.
want to study how outbreaks of pests can be predicted and circumvented, and how natural enemies can be used for pest control.
want to research the underlying mechanisms that lead to an enormous diversity of inflorescence and flower architectures in nature, which is in sharp contrast with the high conservation of gene and genome sequences.
are interested in the role of epigenetic mechanisms and chromatin structure in gene/genome regulation.
want to become an independent researcher by taking part in internships with internationally renowned scientists.
have the ambition to get down to...
