Universities in the US dominate the world rankings and the country also offers a wide variety of exciting study locations. Projects include ultra-high-performance concrete, self-consolidating concrete, innovative high strength concrete and steel bridge systems, composite materials and energy-efficient composite structures, hydrologic effects of global climate change, hydraulic modeling, GIS and watershed management, alternative fuels, water quality, remediation of hazardous wastes, fate and transport of emerging contaminants, risk assessment, pollution prevention, green technology, highway geometric design and safety, intelligent transportation systems, traffic simulation using hardware-in-the-loop simulation, highway-railroad grade crossings, safety aspects of highway design with a unique full scale crash testing facility, risk analysis and reliability of structures, design code calibration, field testing of bridges, pavement engineering, advanced modeling of geomaterials, and application of fuzzy set theories. -

Active research areas include biomedical engineering, digital and wireless communications, digital and VLSI design, digital signal processing, electro-optics, ellipsometry, mixed-signal circuit design, nanotechnology, optics of nanostructure materials, plasma processing, power systems, remote sensing and electromagnetics, and solid-state devices and materials. The department has extensive research facilities for all areas of active research and graduate students have the flexibility to pursue their own research experience. In addition to computing facilities individually operated by each research group, the department administers a network of high-end UNIX workstations and PCs which are regularly upgraded. These facilities are used for classroom instruction as well as the individual needs of the students. -
