Our Environment, Politics and Development MSc programme provides an advanced theoretical understanding of the relationship between development problems and environmental issues. You will explore these relationships from the perspectives of political ecology, development geography and environmental governance. To illustrate these relationships, we use relevant case studies drawn from across the globe.

Students are encouraged to examine critically the relationship between labour, capitalism, development and poverty. We investigate labour in the contemporary social and economic development of the Global South as well as established and emerging social movements of labour in local, national and international spaces. You will learn to identify and evaluate the relationship between collective agency, policy and vice-versa.

The MSc International Development builds on the established global reputation of the Development Studies department as one of the top places in the world to study international development. We welcome applications from those who have worked in development, however broadly defined, but also from students without relevant work experience who can demonstrate a strong interest in, and understanding of, issues pertaining to international development. International Development is a dynamic field concerned not only with processes of change in the Global South but also of social, economic, political and cultural change in middle-income countries and the Global North. The perspective of International Development analyses these processes as interdependent and engages major policy challenges as well as efforts to overcome poverty and insecurity while also presenting a structural analysis. This programme provides a solid interdisciplinary social science formation in the political economy and sociology of development and develops students’ capacities for independent and critical analysis.

This is an online degree that engages critically with the history, politics and practice of humanitarian action. Students take the core module, followed by a selection of elective modules and a final dissertation.

This MSc (or PGDip/PGCert) in Climate Change and Development is an online programme. Climate change is the most significant challenge to achieving sustainable development globally, threatening current patterns of growth and poverty reduction whilst creating global injustice and vulnerability. Yet we are well placed with the knowledge and solutions to simultaneously tackle the crisis, meet the Sustainable Development Goals and improve the lives of people all over the world. Businesses, governments, development agencies and NGOs alike now seek to integrate low-carbon and climate-resilient approaches into their work. The Climate Change and Development programme equips students with a grounding in the conceptual and practical dimensions of mitigation of and adaptation to climate change as they relate to development issues.
