The global demand for plant-derived products such as feed and food is increasing dramatically, as illustrated by the recent doubling of the price of most commodity crops. How can we deal with these exponentially growing demands for food, feed, and bio-energy? How can we cope with the fact that we will have to produce more food on less arable land, under environmentally more challenging conditions? These are just a few questions to be solved by the modern plant biotechnology.

The training in plant biotechnology is embedded in an environment of top science and industrial entrepreneurship where translational research enables the transfer of knowledge from plant models to crops. If you choose to study at Ghent University, you will be studying at the largest Agro-Biotech Campus in Europe.... [-]

Course content

The training in biochemistry and biotechnology has the aim of forming scientists who not only have a thorough knowledge of biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, cell biology and physiology but who can also use the biochemical and biotechnological techniques in a creative and inventive manner on plants, animals or humans. The students are also initiated in the interesting world of bioinformatics.

The program also has a social aim: to apply research and knowledge in favor of humanity and society. The focus within the training reflects this social involvement in research on the origin and treatment of all kinds of illnesses (such as cancer, chronic inflammation and metabolic diseases), on the improvement of plants (sustainable food production, production of food with improved nutritional quality, production of bio-fuels) and on the use of micro-organisms in certain chemical processes (detoxification of contaminants).... PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION

The Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering is a complete English taught two-year programme and leads to a joint degree from UGent and VUB. In this master's course, knowledge and skills in all fields in biomedical engineering will be given, so when you finished the Master's programme, you can be employed as a generalist, and you will also be specialized in one particular field of biomedical engineering. As a student, you will be able to select any field of biomedical engineering. You will be trained to work in interdisciplinary project teams, composed of engineers and medical specialists. To prepare further for interdisciplinary teams, students and scholars are treated as equals. To train for working in a European setting, you will get knowledge in the healthcare situation in several countries in Europe, and you will be trained in cultural differences between European countries....
