Introduction

How does increasing temperatures affect whales and seals? How does overfishing influence marine food-webs? How do we restore and protect the Wadden Sea?

The two-year Master's degree programme in Marine Biology focuses on life in our planet's seas and oceans. Whether you are interested in biological oceanography, conservation of marine mammals, or coastal marine ecology, there are plenty of opportunities: you can design your own study programme to fit your personal preferences.

Our flexible Master's degree programme is open for all students with a bachelor in biology. It includes a number of newly developed master courses which are jointly taught by several research groups in Marine Biology at the University of Groningen and in close co-operation with the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (Texel, Yerseke). The programme is strongly research oriented. You will conduct research under the supervision of experienced scientists. We offer you the experience of working on projects all over the world. For example, our students have studied fish behaviour in Lake Victoria, east-central Africa.... [-]

Would you like a tailor-made programme in Biology? Or do you like to design your programme at the crossroad of different Biology domains? If so, Biology in Groningen is your Master's programme.

Students with a broad interest in biology are able to design a tailor-made programme under the guidance of a staff member who will coach the student throughout their master's programme. Nowadays the most exciting discoveries are often made using a multidisciplinary approach. As a student, you will be closely involved with our research, which is organised within the internationally recognized Groningen Institute for Evolutionary Life Sciences (GELIFES). We offer research in a unique diversity of Biological areas. As a student, you are offered the opportunity to combine different areas of biology - such as Ecology and Evolution, Marine Biology, Neurosciences, Biomedical Sciences, and Molecular Biology - in their Master's degree programme.... Are you interested in the basis of consciousness, the mechanisms of learning or the genetics of behaviour? In this programme, you study the brain, cognition and behaviour from different perspectives.

The main focus of this Research Master is to train students to become independent researchers. For this purpose, a large proportion of the programme is devoted to two research projects in which the students are embedded in successful research groups to conduct their own research.

The programme offers three tracks:

Animal and Human Behaviour (B-track); Cognitive Neuroscience and Cognitive Modelling (C-track); Molecular and Clinical Neuroscience (N-track).

You will become an expert in one of these fields. However, because of the integrated courses and links between these tracks, you will also get a unique and truly multi-disciplinary training. The BCN Research Master is one of the best Neuroscience MSc programmes of the Netherlands (Keuzegids Masters 2015/Dutch Higher Education Guide 2015).... [-]
