Compare 7 MScs in Biodiversity

To receive a master of science degree, or MSc, students must first have a bachelor’s degree. An MSc represents a high level of learning and mastery of a certain field of study. This advanced degree can be completed in one to four years, depending on your course load.

What is a Master of Science in Biodiversity? This field studies the interactions of animals and their environments, including their experiences and physiology and how they both shape their behavior. Scholars develop skills in applying animal behavioral principles to develop solutions to common problems such as animal welfare and conservation. Depending on the institution, this program can include field work as well as lab work (on invertebrates) to give students practical hands-on skills. Depending on your area of interest, you may also choose to study avian biology, genetics or conservation.

Students develop research skills and learn how to apply their research in addressing problems in animal populations; those skills are easily transferable to careers in animal research, animal shelters and university extension programs. Additional courses include statistics and how to design research projects, skills which can transfer to a variety of careers.

The tuition costs for this program vary widely, as some programs include hands-on training in Kenya, Tanzania or other locales. Contact your school of choice directly for pricing information.

Graduates can expect to work in the field or lab doing research, but they will need to spend at least some of their time on a computer analyzing data and writing reports. They may choose to pursue careers in biology, wildlife conservation, law, advocacy or education. Many governments and organizations need these skills in a variety of roles, from park ranger to director-level positions. Additional opportunities include working in zoos, parks and aquariums.

There are many opportunities to dig deep and study this field through a variety of school and programs you can attend online. Search for your program below and contact directly the admission office of the school of your choice by filling in the lead form.

Programme description

The understanding of plant diversity and resources has never been more important. As we face the unprecedented challenges of climate change and environmental degradation, effective environmental surveillance and conservation depend upon detailed knowledge of plants and their habitats.

This programme is run jointly by the University and the world-renowned Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE). The RBGE is home to one of the world’s best living collections of plants (15,000 species across four sites, amounting to five per cent of known world species), a herbarium of three million preserved specimens and one of the UK’s most comprehensive botanical libraries.... USF St. Petersburg has announced the new Master of Science in Conservation Biology degree program, which will launch in Fall 2017. The addition of the new graduate program—the only M.S. thesis-based degree of its kind in the State University System—will complement the institution’s thriving undergraduate degree program in biology, which has grown to include more than 760 enrolled students since its Fall 2012 inception. The increase in biology majors aligns with the state’s goals to prepare more graduates for fields in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math, or STEM.

“This new program, and others like it at USF St. Petersburg, are preparing students to become leaders in creating and leading community, state, national and international efforts in conservation and sustainability,” said Martin Tadlock, regional vice chancellor of Academic Affairs at USFSP. “We have tremendous faculty members engaged in this work and highly supportive community partnerships to help us in that preparation.”... Programme Description

Within conservation science there is increasing recognition of the value of genetic data to support management decisions, however, scientists and managers with the skills and knowledge to apply population genetic theory to conservation practice are lacking. Within this arena, wildlife forensics is an exciting new field that is attracting increasing global attention in the fight against the illegal wildlife trade.

The PPD/Cert/Dip/MSc in Applied Conservation Genetics with Wildlife Forensics aims to provide a blend of theoretical and practical education in the application of genetic data to wildlife management and conservation law enforcement. The programme will cover all essential aspects, from population genetic theory, through data analysis, to the considerations involved in the interpretation and transfer of scientific findings to management, policy and criminal investigation....
