To receive a master of science degree, or MSc, students must first have a bachelor’s degree. An MSc represents a high level of learning and mastery of a certain field of study. This advanced degree can be completed in one to four years, depending on your course load.
What is a Master of Science in Biodiversity? This field studies the interactions of animals and their environments, including their experiences and physiology and how they both shape their behavior. Scholars develop skills in applying animal behavioral principles to develop solutions to common problems such as animal welfare and conservation. Depending on the institution, this program can include field work as well as lab work (on invertebrates) to give students practical hands-on skills. Depending on your area of interest, you may also choose to study avian biology, genetics or conservation.
Students develop research skills and learn how to apply their research in addressing problems in animal populations; those skills are easily transferable to careers in animal research, animal shelters and university extension programs. Additional courses include statistics and how to design research projects, skills which can transfer to a variety of careers.

Graduates can expect to work in the field or lab doing research, but they will need to spend at least some of their time on a computer analyzing data and writing reports. The addition of the new graduate program—the only M.S. thesis-based degree of its kind in the State University System—will complement the institution’s thriving undergraduate degree program in biology, which has grown to include more than 760 enrolled students since its Fall 2012 inception. The increase in biology majors aligns with the state’s goals to prepare more graduates for fields in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math, or STEM.
