Those who want to advance their career in the science realm may want to consider a Master of Science, or MSc. This postgraduate degree opens up a lot of possibilities for those who want to work in research or the pharmaceutical field.

What is an MSc in Biochemistry?  A master’s degree in the field of Biochemistry furthers the study of chemical processes that relate to living organisms, and is a diverse and fascinating discipline. Studies consist of learning more about the chemical reactions and combinations that take place in the body for metabolism, growth, heredity, production, and more. You will also further your education in relation to the functions of fats, enzymes, carbohydrates, proteins, and the molecular basis of genes. During your studies, you will work with living organisms such as yeasts, bacteria, plants, and cell cultures. You will plan and perform experiments, as well as learn how to interpret their results, which will help prepare you for the modern science laboratory.

Working towards a Master’s Degree in Biochemistry will not only expand your scientific understanding and terminology, but it will also help you in other areas. You will develop problem solving skills, analytical thinking, and be able to handle vast amounts of complex information. These skills will help you gain employment in a variety of career fields.

An MSc in Biochemistry takes around two years to complete, and costs can vary depending on the school. Researching the different institutions and programs is important in making sure the program is the right one for the student.

The Master of Science (MSc) and Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) in Bioprocessing have been developed by the Institute of Technology Sligo (IT Sligo) to meet the growing needs of the Biopharmaceutical Industry.

Biopharmaceuticals, also known as biologic(al) medical products, or biologics, are any pharmaceutical drug product manufactured in, extracted from, or synthesised from biological sources. The Medical Biotechnology and Biopharmaceutical sectors are among the fastest growing in the Life Sciences area both nationally and internationally.

IT Sligo together with the National Institute for Bioprocessing Research & Training (NIBRT)* have been delivering a part-time online MSc and PGD in Biopharmaceutical Science since 2008 (www.nibrt.ie/masters). These courses (designed in extensive collaboration with industry) are aimed at Science and Engineering graduates with industrial experience who wish to up-skill or cross-skill for a career in biopharmaceuticals and normally take 2.5 years to complete. The courses have been shown to be extremely successful at up-skilling and cross-skilling individuals either working or hoping to transition into the Biopharmaceutical sector. There still, however, remains a skills gap in the Bioprocessing area which means that additional graduates from Industry focussed programmes are needed. In a recent 2016 “Trends in Biopharma” Survey, recruitment and development of talent have emerged as a key threat to the future growth of the sector (1).... [-]

Study objectives

Biomass refining constitutes the sustainable processing of biomass into a spectrum of marketable products and energy. The key technological contents of the major is treatment of biomass with tailored mechanical, chemical, biochemical and thermochemical processes leading to selective and efficient fractionation of the biomass components into functional fractions, and further refining of the fractions to fibres, polymers, chemical compounds and fuels or their reactants. The focus point of the major is the physiological function and structure of plants as well as the reactivity of the chemical components of lignocellulosic biomass in the conversion processes. Great attention is paid to process integration modelling, taking into account recycling and waste management. This includes the development of an integrated, rational and transparent evaluation framework for sustainable assessments, such as Life Cycle Assessments (LCA).... [-]

Course content

The training in biochemistry and biotechnology has the aim of forming scientists who not only have a thorough knowledge of biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, cell biology and physiology but who can also use the biochemical and biotechnological techniques in a creative and inventive manner on plants, animals or humans. The students are also initiated in the interesting world of bioinformatics.

The program also has a social aim: to apply research and knowledge in favor of humanity and society. The focus within the training reflects this social involvement in research on the origin and treatment of all kinds of illnesses (such as cancer, chronic inflammation and metabolic diseases), on the improvement of plants (sustainable food production, production of food with improved nutritional quality, production of bio-fuels) and on the use of micro-organisms in certain chemical processes (detoxification of contaminants)....
