MSc in Resource Recovery

As the Earth’s population rises and the global demand for consumable products increases, the amount of waste produced and energy consumed world-wide through both production and consumption is on an alarming rise. As more and more companies look for methods of making this cycle sustainable, the services of an appropriately qualified engineer become very attractive.

By studying this unique master programme in Resource Recovery, given by the Swedish Centre for Resource Recovery, you will develop skills and competence to analyze and resolve problems related to disposing, processing and recycling of residuals into useful products.

Such a useful and salable product can be an item to the automotive industry made from biological material which can easily be recycled. It could be biogas or ethanol to replace oil and petrol. Or electricity, heating and cooling produced sustainably by thermal treatment of waste. Why not fish feed in addition to solve a waste problem and also reduce the depletion of the oceans? Regardless of whether you will be working as a researcher or work in business and management you will be a global community builder, with knowledge and skills to take on challenges in areas even not directly related to resource recovery.

The first semester courses are designed to increase your intertechnical expertise in the area and give you an overview of the possibilities and of the problems in resource recovery. Apart from purely technical issues also social aspects will be considered as the introduction of technical solutions must have an acceptance in society in order to function. At worst, they may even pose a threat to people's livelihood in some parts of the world .

In the second semester you specialize in one of the following areas:

  • energy with a focus on thermal energy recovery: producing electricity and heat but also cooling and vehicle fuel by various thermal processes
  • polymer technology: materials development and methods to facilitate sustainable recycling of polymeric materials
  • industrial biotechnology: development of bio energy and materials, i.e. processing waste and other waste products into biofuels with biological methods and new materials and products

In addition to agricultural, forestry and industrial waste there is currently more than 2 billion tons of domestic waste generated per year in the world. The waste causes significant environmental problems, but is also a resource that can be recycled. This ensures that resource recovery, which already employs large numbers of people, will continue to be a growth industry. Potential employers are energy companies, bioprocess industries, consulting firms, research institutes, recycling companies, equipment manufacturers, government and other industries where you can work with, for example, product or process development. Working as environmental manager at companies is another possible career. You also can choose to go on to graduate studies in that area, either in Sweden or other countries, an option which is chosen by many of our students.
