Introduction
Are you passionate about developing the next generation of production facilities for global manufacturing companies? This master’s program will bring you up to speed on the latest advances in modern production, giving you the skills to improve and develop manufacturing processes and high-performing sustainable production systems. You will be responsible for helping your industry achieve new levels of performance.
Manufacturing is fundamentally important for the welfare of modern society, with a key part to play in helping achieve goals within economic, ecologic, and social sustainability. Around one-third of jobs in the European Union are related to the manufacturing sector, with several of the largest manufacturing companies worldwide located right here in Gothenburg — Volvo Cars, Volvo Trucks, and SKF, for example. We offer close cooperation with them and other leading industrial partners, active both in Sweden and internationally, providing an attractive environment for international students from all over the world. The program features continuous interaction with such companies, through real-world project courses, master thesis projects, field-trips, and guest lectures.
The subjects of automation technology and production management form the fundamental areas for this master’s program, while other possible courses handle topics such as production systems, mechatronics, and manufacturing.
The program will teach you how to lead and develop new projects, as well as management systems already in full operation. You will receive education in a broad base of production engineering, leaving you well-placed to take up roles across a wide spectrum of career opportunities — from the automotive industry to medicine, health care, and food. You will be ideally qualified to take up roles such as a manufacturing engineer, consultant, working in management, and more, at globally leading firms.
Career
The professional area for a production engineer goes across sectors - from the automotive, medicine, and healthcare industry to food production. With a broad production engineering knowledge base, the program gives a wide spectrum of career opportunities including advancement as specialists in the areas of Production Systems, Manufacturing Processes, and Production Management.
Three of the most common employment directly after graduation are:
- Manufacturing engineer: developing production lines and new technology at major companies and SMEs.
- Manufacturing and logistics consultants, e.g. in the virtual manufacturing field.
- Manufacturing management trainees at major companies such as Volvo, Scania, and Orkla Foods.
Other common examples among our alumni are project leaders, automation engineers, machine designers, business developers, and managers for production and development organizations after some years of work experience.
Some examples of employers are H&M, Scania Trucks, Volvo Cars, Volvo Trucks, SKF, Toyota, Rolls Royce, Ericsson, and ÅF. Our graduates are also qualified for Ph.D. studies at Chalmers or other universities worldwide.
General entry requirements
A Bachelor's degree in Science, Engineering, Technology, or Architecture
To fulfill the general entry requirement for a Master's program at Chalmers (at advanced level/the second cycle), the prospective student must hold a degree that is equivalent to a Swedish Bachelor's degree (minimum 3 years, 180 Swedish higher education credits) in either Science, Engineering, Technology or Architecture.
- All applicants must document their formal academic qualifications to prove their eligibility. Only documentation from internationally recognized universities will be approved by the Swedish Council for Higher Education which manages the website universityadmissions.se.
- If an applicant is also a holder of a second degree such as a Master's degree, that may be to fulfill specific (course) requirements, it cannot be used to fulfill the general entry requirement on its own.
In your final year of Bachelor's Studies
Students in their last year of studies who don't yet have documentation of their soon-to-be-completed degree can be accepted.
Restrictions
Degrees that are constructed on one another cannot consist of the same course
Applicants who fulfill the general entry requirements for the second cycle (master’s level) programs and eventually specific entry requirements can be admitted to a master’s program. Applicants cannot be evaluated as unqualified in the qualifying academic merits which include courses from the program’s plan in those programs that they have applied for if that occurs.
Courses included in an earned first cycle degree (bachelor’s level) or professional qualification of at least 180 cr. (180hp) or the equivalent foreign qualification that are prerequisites for master’s qualifications may not be included in the higher qualifications. This also applies to prerequisite courses for master’s programs, regardless of whether they are included in the underlying qualification. *
*) Local Qualifications Framework for Chalmers University of Technology - first and second cycle qualifications.
Restrictions for Citizens from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea)
Chalmers cannot admit applicants with citizenship of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea only to any program or course, due to the Council Regulation (EU) 2017/1509 of 30 August 2017 concerning restrictive measures against the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and repealing Regulation (EC) 329/2007.
For applicants with double citizenship of which one is of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and the other of another country, the citizenship of the other country has precedence in this respect.
