Modern biotechnology has had a dramatic effect on the world economy and on modern society. Recent developments in biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, and immunology provided biotechnology with a new momentum and a new prominence. What we owe to modern biotechnology is, among other things, drugs of a new generation (biopharmaceuticals), fast diagnostic tests and a therapy using tissue engineering and stem cells. Biotechnology has its applications not only in medicine but also in agriculture, in fuel production, as well as in waste and pollution removal.
Program Description, Type, and Duration
Molecular Biotechnology is a second-cycle programme of studies leading to a degree of magister (equivalent of a master's degree). It is dedicated to students who want to understand molecular mechanisms of biological processes and those who would like to put this knowledge into practice.
The program takes 2 years (4 semesters), during which students are required to obtain minimum 120 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credits and to participate in about 1550 programme hours. The academic year begins in October and ends in June.
It is a full-time programme of studies which offers both obligatory and elective courses. Most elective courses, which may be related to such fields of studies like medical biotechnology, plant biotechnology, gene therapy, stem cell biology or molecular aspects of bacterial and viral pathogenesis and bioenergetics, students choose following their own interests.
Students may count on help in choosing their path of study aon their diploma dissertation supervisor. Besides attending motivating lectures and seminars, students participate in advanced laboratory classes, and those who are best have an opportunity to take part in the Faculty's research pursuits. The programme main objective is to provide students with the most useful practical skills and to introduce them to a plethora of research methods and techniques used in modern biological sciences.
The final element in the program is a diploma dissertation which students complete on the basis of the research and experiments they have carried out. Following the formal acceptance of the thesis, students take an oral final examination.
The Molecular Biotechnology programme is offered by the Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, a leading scientific and educational institution in Poland. The Faculty is located in the south-west part of the city on the newly-erected III JU Campus. A modern building, well-equipped laboratories, and a vast number of research teams make the FBBB a great place to study.
The Molecular Biology programme welcomes students with:
- Bachelor’s degree in biology, biotechnology, biochemistry, chemistry, biophysics (or Bachelor’s degree related to one of the above-mentioned disciplines), and a good command of English. The admission is based on the results of an interview which verifies knowledge in the field of biological sciences, fluency in English and the candidate’s traits and resolves to follow the Molecular Biotechnology program.
