Program Description

MSc in Mechanical Engineering

National University of Ireland Galway College of Engineering & Informatics

Big Challenges being addressed by this programme – motivation.

The programme is designed to meet the international demand for 90 ECTS Level 9 qualification in Mechanical Engineering.

Programme objectives & purpose

The MSc is a 12-month, 90 ECTS Level 9 Masters in Mechanical Engineering, which will take engineering (BE) and closely-related graduates to an advanced level of mechanical engineering capability, focusing on advanced design, analysis, materials and manufacture via state-of-the-art technology. This course offers a broad range of advanced engineering modules, including advanced applied mathematics and advanced computational modelling, as well as industry-specific advanced modules in manufacturing technology, offshore engineering, energy and medical device development and materials. A substantial 12-month research thesis allows the students to implement new research skills developed within a specially-designed module on engineering research methods, including publication of the research findings. Each MSc project focuses on a current ‘hot topic’ in the mechanical engineering industry and is carried out in collaboration with industry partners.

What’s special about CoEI/National University Ireland Galway in this area:

The CoEI have a range of specialist level 9 programmers in multiple disciplines of Engineering and Information Technology, that follow on from the level 8 (B.E.) programmes. The college has a long tradition of producing highly skilled mechanical engineering graduates who achieve hugely successful careers in industry, research and academia at an international level. At NUI Galway, we have a considerable range of state-of-the-art facilities and technical expertise for engineering research. We also are located in the heart of one of Europe’s medical device industry hubs, with over 8,300 MedTech employees in Galway, ranging from start-up companies up to the numerous multinational medical device companies. NUI Galway has undoubtedly been part of the establishment and continued growth of this medtech R&D and manufacturing hub.

Programme Structure

This 90 ECTS programme includes a substantial 30 ECTS research project, complemented by 60 ECTS of modules (including 10 ECTS of optional modules).

Programme Content

The research project is directly supervised by a member of academic staff for the full 12-month period on a selected industry or research topic and is assessed on the basis of a written thesis. The modules focus on advanced engineering research methods and technology, where students will combine design, computational methods and modelling, as well as experimental testing and prototyping activities, utilizing state-of-the-art research facilities in the New Engineering Building in NUI Galway. Over two semesters, students will take a total of 10 mandatory advanced modules in mechanics, materials, applied mathematics for engineering and research methods. In addition, students will choose 2 further modules from a choice of 9 specialist modules including turbomachines, offshore engineering and advanced energy systems.

Opportunity for a number of Industrial & Research internships:

The topics for the 30 ECTS research thesis are heavy industry and research focused, building on the highly successful relationship that the Discipline of Mechanical Engineering has with local, national and international engineering companies, and on the diverse range of advanced research activities of the Mechanical Engineering academic staff.
