Introduction
We live in the information age, with communications and information processing at the very heart of society. Intelligent transportation systems, smart cities, traffic safety, healthcare, and cloud services — all of these technologies and more rely on our ability to accurately and reliably share, store, process, and deliver massive amounts of data. This master’s program will train you to design, build and reimagine the systems of an interconnected future, preparing for a career in a constantly and rapidly evolving field.
Graduates of this program will be ready for an advanced engineering career in the fields of information and communication technology, combining deep theoretical and applied knowledge with the skills to conduct complex projects and a passion for discovery. In the core courses of the program, the focus lies on giving you solid analytical skills and an understanding of the fundamental principles of communication and information processing, including random signal analysis, digital signal processing, antennas, information theory, and coding theory.
The volume and variety of information services and applications are expanding daily and the skills required to handle this flood of data and deal with the accompanying challenges are in tremendous demand. The need for communication engineers goes far beyond conventional data delivery and storage problems.
Generally, the educational methods in this program place a specific emphasis on building and refining problem-solving skills, teamwork, and presentation skills, while the master’s thesis gives you training in individual research, project planning, documentation, and presentation.
You will also have the opportunity to interact with leading figures in the industry via guest lectures and study visits. The program offers three main tracks for specialization, with a generous number of elective courses to choose from.
Studying in this program will prepare you for a hugely varied and fascinating career in the ‘interconnected world’. Your knowledge and ability will be highly valued, and you could work in fields ranging from intelligent transportation systems and traffic safety to the Internet-of-things, Industry 4.0, environmental monitoring, and smart power grids — to name just a few.
Career
The master’s program in Information and communication technology prepares you to work at the cutting edge of technology in areas such as multimedia communication, data storage and computing, intelligent transportation, traffic safety, positioning and navigation, wireless networks, and the Internet-of-things; areas in which information processing plays a significant role. Our students can usually be arranged into two groups after finishing the program.
General entry requirements
A Bachelor's degree in Science, Engineering, Technology, or Architecture
To fulfill the general entry requirement for a Master's program at Chalmers (at advanced level/the second cycle), the prospective student must hold a degree that is equivalent to a Swedish Bachelor's degree (minimum 3 years, 180 Swedish higher education credits) in either Science, Engineering, Technology or Architecture.
- All applicants must document their formal academic qualifications to prove their eligibility. Only documentation from internationally recognized universities will be approved by the Swedish Council for Higher Education which manages the website universityadmissions.se.
- If an applicant is also a holder of a second degree such as a Master's degree, that may be to fulfill specific (course) requirements, it cannot be used to fulfill the general entry requirement on its own.
In your final year of Bachelor's Studies
Students in their last year of studies who don't yet have documentation of their soon-to-be-completed degree can be accepted.
Restrictions
Degrees that are constructed on one another cannot consist of the same course
Applicants who fulfill the general entry requirements for the second cycle (master’s level) programs and eventually specific entry requirements can be admitted to a master’s program. Applicants cannot be evaluated as unqualified in the qualifying academic merits which include courses from the program’s plan in those programs that they have applied for if that occurs.
Courses included in an earned first cycle degree (bachelor’s level) or professional qualification of at least 180 cr. (180hp) or the equivalent foreign qualification that are prerequisites for master’s qualifications may not be included in the higher qualifications. This also applies to prerequisite courses for master’s programs, regardless of whether they are included in the underlying qualification. *
*) Local Qualifications Framework for Chalmers University of Technology - first and second cycle qualifications.
Restrictions for Citizens from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea)
Chalmers cannot admit applicants with citizenship of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea only to any program or course, due to the Council Regulation (EU) 2017/1509 of 30 August 2017 concerning restrictive measures against the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and repealing Regulation (EC) 329/2007.
For applicants with double citizenship of which one is of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and the other of another country, the citizenship of the other country has precedence in this respect.
