MSc in Econometrics and Management Science – Specialisation Business Analytics and Quantitative Marketing

Using data science to retrieve hidden information

The need for quantitative support for operational and strategic decisions is ever-increasing. Do you want to help businesses understand their customers better and make smarter decisions? Are maths, statistics and econometrics your forte? Do data science and the use of advanced methods appeal to you? The Business Analytics and Quantitative Marketing programme focuses on the most creative side of data science: converting big data into knowledge, finding opportunities and predicting behaviour.

This challenging programme teaches you how to solve business problems from an econometric point of view, perform quantitative research by using and further developing state-of-the-art data-analysis methods and translate findings into actionable advice.

How many reasons do you need?

At Erasmus School of Economics, we are leaders in quantitative research and renowned for our high-quality practice-based teaching methods. Add this to our close ties to the business world and our many successful alumni in the field… and you know why Rotterdam is where you want to specialise in Business Analytics and Quantitative Marketing.

Careers

Solid (management) decisions in business and marketing increasingly depend on quantitative analysis. Not surprisingly, business analysts are in high demand. For the first step in their careers, our alumni found jobs as a (marketing) researcher or data scientist at organisations like:

ACNielsen, GfK, KPN, Unilever and Bol.com

  • smaller specialised consultancy firms
  • financial institutions like banks or insurance companies
  • academia

Such a position is also an excellent stepping stone for a senior research or management position at similar corporations and institutions.

"Obtaining relevant information from very large and complex datasets to support accurate decision-making gives me a kick"

Curriculum

A student in the Business Analytics and Quantitative Marketing MSc learns how to make use of the enormous amount of data that is available in corporations and other organisations to support decision-making in business. Students will be introduced to state of the art research techniques and will, after completion of the program, be able to contribute to new developments in this field.

The programme is made up of seven core courses (every 4 ECTS), a seminar (12 ECTS) and the Master's thesis (20 ECTS, including the Master's thesis proposal). Each core course focuses on a particular technique or methodology. In the seminar, students form small groups and focus their complete attention to solve an actual business case in eight weeks time. The seminar is usually organised in cooperation with a company. Below you can find the course schedule as well as some additional information on each core course.

'Business Analytics and Quantitative Marketing gives you the right tools to become a real treasure hunter in a world of data overload'

Why I chose Business Analytics and Quantitative Marketing?

The moment I started the pre-master of Econometrics (I arrived at Erasmus School of Economics with a little detour), I knew already that I wanted to continue with the specialisation Business Analytics and Quantitative Marketing. This specialisation was the most appealing to me, as this very emerging field has a technical as well as a practical side.

Become a real treasure hunter

It is very challenging to find valuable information in the huge amount of data that is gathered nowadays. As this amount is still increasing, the ability to process the data and draw useful conclusions and plausible predictions out of it is becoming more and more of importance. This programme gives you the tools to do so, to become a real treasure hunter.

Besides the analytical side, it is also important to have a good dose of social skills. You need to be able to explain your approach, convince people that your model is correct and help people to draw the right conclusions and make their process of decision-making easier.

If you like to be challenged, to translate your thoughts into action, to study hard, and if you are motivated: this programme is the way to get the most out of yourself.
