MSc in Civil Engineering

The MSc in Civil Engineering is designed to provide specialised, postgraduate training across the whole range of Civil Engineering. The overall aim of the course is to enhance the engineering skills of its graduates, and an extended project within one of the Civil Engineering fields forms a major part of the course.

The development of any progressive society is largely dependent upon the skill, imagination and dedication of its civil engineers. They are concerned with the planning, design, construction, maintenance and decommissioning of highways, railways, airports, docks, harbours, canals, coastal defences, irrigation systems, essential municipal services (such as water supply, drainage and sewage disposal), and structural work including buildings, bridges, dams, reservoirs and power stations. A civil engineering career offers many different challenges and opportunities in all parts of the world.

Scheme Structure

The MSc in Civil Engineering is a full-time course lasting twelve months, comprising two semesters of lectures and coursework followed by a further dedicated project period of four months for research and the preparation of a dissertation. All staff involved are research active in practical areas of the discipline, and this provides scope for interesting and up to date MSc research projects. The level of commitment of all staff to teaching and learning is high and the courses are taught by staff who are expert in the fields in which they lecture.


The record of employment of graduates of the Cardiff University MSc in Civil Engineering is excellent, with the majority of graduates joining engineering consultants. A small number of graduates (about 5 to 10% each year) go on to further study, typically a PhD.


This programme has been accredited by the ICE, IStructE, IHT and IHIE, as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer under the provisions of UK-SPEC for intakes 2009-2013 inclusive, for candidates that have already acquired a CEng accredited BEng (Hons) undergraduate first degree or an IEng accredited BSc (Hons) undergraduate first degree.

Entry Requirements

Admission to the MSc in Civil Engineering requires a good first degree in civil, architectural or structural engineering, or in a cognate numerate scientific discipline, or appropriate professional experience. Currently, a good first degree is taken to mean one that would be equivalent in attainment to a 2(i) honours classification from a UK university.

Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to obtain a satisfactory standard in an approved English language qualification before being accepted unconditionally on to a postgraduate course of study. The University's English Language Service for International Students provides English language support and advice on academic study skills to full-time overseas students studying - or intending to study - at Cardiff University.

Funding Opportunities

A limited number of Cardiff School of Engineering International Scholarships are available for international students applying for this MSc course. There is no need to apply for these, eligible applicants will be considered on the basis of their application form for the MSc.

  2. To provide a sound scientific, technical and commercial understanding of civil engineering issues and practice.
  3. To advance recognition of the broad nature of civil engineering through the integration of knowledge from structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, transportation engineering and water engineering.
  4. To advance and enhance engineering theory and practice in the context of the management of civil engineering challenges, through the development of new skills at a high level.
  5. To promote originality in the application of knowledge and an understanding of how the boundaries of knowledge are advanced through research.
  6. To provide training in engineering research methods and to develop a range of related transferable skills.
  7. To provide training in the direct application of knowledge to the assessment and solution of civil engineering challenges, encouraging students to deal with complex issues both systematically and creatively and to show originality in tackling both familiar and unfamiliar problems.
  8. To produce professional and highly proficient engineers to work in the field of civil engineering.

Educational aims

  1. To introduce the principles of transport infrastructure planning and design.
  2. To develop an understanding of free surface flow hydraulics and associated water supply issues.
  3. To promote awareness of advanced techniques and analysis methods in the design and assessment of structures.
  4. To promote awareness of the role of numerical modelling in examining, understanding and predicting the behaviour of civil engineering systems, drawing on an understanding of the underlying processes and a knowledge of the characteristics of particular systems.
  5. To provide opportunities for additional masters level study in selected specialist areas across the broad range of civil engineering.
  6. To provide opportunities to develop an appreciation of the principles and activities involved in the day to day management of engineering business units, typical of those within which civil engineering is practiced.
