Animal Physiology

Animal physiology graduate students have advanced knowledge of animal and human biology, including a thorough knowledge of body structure and functions. They are especially familiar with integrative physiological functions of the whole organism and their regulations, as well as with the basic molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying complex physiological processes. A broad theoretical knowledge complemented by useful methodological experience and practical skills gained by laboratory training and experimental work on master thesis project provides an excellent background for professional success of the graduates in both basic and applied research. Graduates of the master level of animal physiology have a good command of the general principles of scientific work and they can continue in doctoral study programs.


Anthropology and Human Genetics

Graduates are educated in physical anthropology, human anatomy and physiology, human ecology, ontogenetic and phylogenetic development of man, human and molecular genetics, molecular diagnostics of inherited disorders, methodology of science and in fields of their specialization (ethology, forensic genetics, proteomics, teratology, endocrinology, biomedical technologies etc). Methods applied include anthropometry, roentgenometry, 3D morphometry and methods of molecular genetics, immunochemistry and biochemistry. They are prepared for a career as university teachers, research workers, specialists in criminology, forensic and clinical medicine, industrial and osteological anthropology, archeology, museum specialists etc.


Botany

Graduates of Botany at the Charles University of Prague are experts in plant biology and ecology. Their theoretical and practical knowledge is based on field and experimental methods of plant science. Biosystematic and ecological approaches cover the main groups of plants, autotrophic and fungal microorganisms, and their phylogeny, geography, and ecology. There is a broad overlap of botany with other basic and applied sciences. The graduates often continue their scientific career in a Ph.D. study. They occupy positions in plant and forest technology, nature protection, hygiene, regional development, water technology, ethnobotany, ecotoxicology, pharmacology, landscape management and restoration ecology.


Cellular and Developmental Biology

The holder of this degree has knowledge of molecular cell biology, developmental biology, as well as of areas related to the topic of the M.Sc. thesis. The study was focused on cell regulations in both uni- and multi-cellular organisms and on the manifestations and the mechanisms of differentiation of cells and tissues in developing systems, including their pathology. The methodical and practical skills obtained include molecular genetics, biochemistry, genomics and proteomics, cell biology and developmental morphology. The graduate is prepared to work in basic as well as applied science and has a potential to continue in doctoral programs.


Ecology

The graduates of Ecology subject acquire theoretical knowledge and practical (methodic) skills covering all common ecological concepts, and within this framework, they achieve a specific education in terrestrial and aquatic domains, encompassing all structural levels from molecular ecology, autecology, intra- and interpopulation interactions, towards large-scale ecology (communities, ecosystems, phylogeography). They are able to use recent analytical approaches of quantitative ecological data. The graduate is well prepared either to highly demanding research work including the relevant Ph.D. study or to professional and methodical (but legislative) work as in surveys, analyses or monitoring for state, public or commercial administration.


Experimental Plant Biology

The graduate has a general knowledge of structures and biological processes in plant cell and body - architecture, metabolism, ontogenesis, and its regulation, and interaction of plant and environment. The graduate can pursue his studies at postgraduate level and continue in a research work on the experimental biology of plants. The knowledge of plant physiology is applicable in practically focused fields like agronomy, horticulture and breeding, forestry, Phytopathology, plant biotechnology, ecology, and environmental protection or in the education of biology at secondary schools (didactics must be supplemented). A general practical experience of microscopic, biochemical and molecular biological methods and the general biological knowledge give the ability to work in other fields of biology, in a special commodity trade or state administration.


Genetics, Molecular Biology, and Virology

The one who has finished his studies has deep knowledge of genetics, molecular biology and in virology. Regarding his aiming with which he worked up his diploma thesis, he is specialist in some of the specific spheres of these scientific branches (e.g. cytogenetics, molecular genetics and gene engineering, plant or animal genetics, genetics of microbes, molecular biology of microbes, molecular virology etc.). He is experienced in methods of molecular biology, biochemistry, and cytogenetics. Complex erudition in genetics, molecular biology and in virology makes him be of use in all kinds of research institutions both of theoretical and of applied biological research, in biomedicine, in biotechnology, in specialized clinical laboratories, in the institutions of plant, animal and microorganism breeding, in microbiological industry etc.


Immunology

Graduates have a solid knowledge of modern immunology in the full range of technical molecular and cellular bases through practical methodological aspects of experimental immunology to the basics of clinical immunology. In addition to specialized knowledge of immunology, students obtain good theoretical knowledge and basic practical experimental skills in related fields of molecular and cell biology, biochemistry and microbiology. After defending thesis he/she is practically well acquainted with the specialized experimental methods, work with literature and the general principles of scientific work. Expected is to continue in the doctoral degree in immunology.


Microbiology

Master of Science in microbiology gains a complex education in the field of cell and molecular biology of bacteria and yeasts at the recent level of knowledge. Graduates are skilled in basic microbiological, biochemical and analytical methods and in techniques of molecular genetics. They are able to achieve new original experimental results, evaluate them critically and publish. Graduates are educated for the work in both the basic research and industrial, medical, environmental microbiology and biotechnology. They are qualified for a broad spectrum of professions, i.e. above all, in research institutions, in educational and health care systems, in industry and administration.


Parasitology

Graduates of the master level in parasitology have a thorough knowledge of parasitic organisms (parasitic protists, helminths, and arthropods). Graduates are particularly familiar with parasite morphology, ecology, taxonomy, and phylogeny, molecular biology, biochemistry and physiology, pathogenic effects, epidemiology, and diagnostics. The study of parasitology meaningfully joins traditional (descriptive) and modern (experimental) approaches and underlines host-parasite interactions. Graduates are qualified for basic and applied research focused on parasitology and related disciplines (cell biology, immunology, microbiology, zoology). They can also work in universities, medical and veterinary diagnostic laboratories and so on. Participation of students in international research projects enables their future career at institutions abroad.

Protistology

Graduates of Protistology at Charles University in Prague are experts in diversity, ecology and evolutionary history of protists. They acquired knowledge of various microscopic and experimental biological methods (i.e. observation, cultivation, and molecular analyses). They can analyze molecular data on phylogenetic and diversity structure of protists. Graduates can also routinely isolate and cultivate protist strains. Their skills include advanced microscopic methods, such as fluorescent and confocal microscopy, and various methods of electron microscopy. Graduates may continue their scientific careers in Ph.D. programmes or they can find jobs in biotechnology industries, hygiene, water technology, the food industry or ecotoxicology.


Theoretical and Evolutionary Biology

Training for scientific work in the area of theoretical (mathematical or philosophical) reflection of biological data, and in the history of biology. The graduates can continue in postgraduate programs of similar contents. The graduates will get insights into areas linked with problems of evolution of life and its interpretation (mathematical, genetic, philosophical), with the philosophy of life, history, and philosophy of biology, and similar boundary areas. They can become members of teams in biology (processing and interpreting data) as well as in humanities, where a reflection of what are the hotspots of modern biology is often lacking.


Zoology

Graduates are able to design, perform and statistically analyze experiments or observations focusing on zoology on relevant methodological levels. They are able to interpret obtained results and publish them in international scientific journals. They are also able to pass this information onto other scientists by presenting results at conferences, and other media outlets to the general public; taking part in active lecturing at academic departments of relevant universities is another one of the abilities of graduates. Therefore, these young scientists are able to be offered job opportunities at universities, scientific departments which focus on animal biology. Other job opportunities are provided by way of non-zoological research institutes, which facilitate methods that were a part of the curriculum that the zoology graduates adopted during courses such as molecular and biochemical research, taxonomy and phylogeny, morphology and development, and biostatistics.
