A career in the accounting sector requires a high level of understanding of both the theory and practice of accounting and finance and this specialist Masters' degree is aimed towards partly qualified accountants who want to combine their practical experience with further academic training. The course will develop your knowledge to higher levels and is aligned with professional body qualifications. It part-prepares you for undertaking further professional examinations in accounting.

Taught by our highly qualified staff who have considerable experience of working in accounting and finance, this course will equip you with the skills necessary to gain high-level positions in the profession. There's also the option of a placement in the third semester of the standard full-time route, further boosting your employability.

You'll benefit from a wide range of extra-curricular activities including Academic skills for Finance, Accounting and Governance and Research Techniques, a range of Bloomberg-based activities, specialist visitor speakers, and expert symposiums and conferences. You'll take part in a residential weekend to discuss current events and specific problems affecting the accountancy field with academics and a visitor practitioner.

There is a fast track route available for fully qualified CCAB accountants; this route will take 10 months to complete and consists of two taught modules and a dissertation.


ACCA and CIMA exemptions


ACCA Exemptions

On completion of the course, you will be on a fast track to becoming ACCA qualified, and exempt from the following modules:

  • F1 - Accountant in Business
  • F2 - Management Accounting
  • F3 - Financial Accounting
  • F4 - Corporate and Business Law


CIMA Exemptions

On completion of the course, you will be eligible for the master’s gateway route. The Master’s gateway route is an accelerated entry route to the CIMA Professional Qualification and the individuals are required to take the CIMA Gateway Exam and get all 11 exemptions from certificate, operational and management level exams after successfully passing the CIMA Gateway Exam.

Modules

All modules are assessed by a mix of coursework, individual and group presentations and written exams. A typically taught module involves a total of 200 study hours (52 contact hours and 148 group and private study hours). The use of Bloomberg and Thomson-One Banker are embedded within modules.

Placements

In addition to academic rigor, the Masters is highly oriented to support your professional development.

An optional placement in a relevant business area is available in the third semester of the full-time route. This will enhance your employability skills and apply accounting and finance theory to contemporary business practices.

If you take part in a placement, the dissertation may be linked to your placement experience. A placement is not currently offered in the part-time or fast-track mode.


Facilities

Specialist industry software prepares our students with the digital skills that employers' value. Students on our programmes have access to Bloomberg, Thomson One Banker, SAGE, Blueprint, FAME, NVivo, and SPSS.


Teaching and learning

Participation and active learning are encouraged through workshops, seminars, case studies and student-led discussion. You'll also benefit from excellent learning materials and small class sizes, and receive training in the use of Bloomberg and Thomson-One Banker, and specialist software (SPSS and N-Vivo).


Entry requirements

Applicants are normally students who have completed:

  • At least a 2.2 Honours degree in a relevant subject area (e.g. accounting or finance); or
  • Fundamentals Level (Knowledge and Skills) of the ACCA professional examinations; or
  • Completion of the Operational and Managerial levels of CIMA examinations; or
  • the equivalent professional accountancy qualifications of an overseas accountancy body.
  • We welcome qualifications from around the world. English language qualifications for international students: IELTS score of 6.5.

Accreditation of Prior Learning:

Applicants who have passed any of the following ACCA Professional Papers may be eligible to claim exemption from the equivalent course modules (up to a maximum of three modules) – P1 (Governance, Risk and Ethics), P2 (Corporate Reporting), P3 (Business Analysis) and P7 (Advanced Audit and Assurance).

Applicants may be required to attend for interview by the Course Director or Admissions Tutor.

Entry requirements for MSc Applied Accounting (Fast Track)

The Fast track route is available for fully qualified CCAB accountants (ACA, ACCA, CIPFA or CIMA). Other accountancy bodies will be considered on an individual basis.

Successful applicants will study two taught modules and complete a dissertation or business report.

Applicants may be required to attend for interview by the Course Director or Admissions Tutor.
