This course is for

Graduates who have little or no business experience and want a career in finance or accounting.

Overview

Receive a solid theoretical foundation in accounting and finance. Use your quantitative skills and enhance your employability. You’ll graduate prepared for a finance-related career.

Develop an in-depth knowledge of the financial system. You’ll learn to analyse financial decisions and the motivations of people making them. You’ll apply this knowledge in a range of real-world scenarios.

Our course brings in expertise from the University’s departments of Mathematical Sciences and Economics. This ensures you’ll have access to a wide range of teaching and research experience.

Content and structure

Semester one: taught units

Compulsory units

You will take these units:

  • Econometrics for finance
  • Theory of financial decision making
  • Financial accounting 1
  • Management accounting 1

Optional Units

You will select one of these units:

  • Banking Investment management
  • Corporate governance

Semester two: taught units

Compulsory units

You will take these units:

  • Financial Econometrics
  • Corporate finance
  • Financial accounting 2
  • Management accounting 2

Optional units

You will select one of these units:

  • International finance
  • Financial statement analysis and company valuation
  • New venture financing

Dissertation

The course will finish with a dissertation. You will produce a unique piece of research using techniques learned throughout the year.

The Practice Track

You will work with one of our partner organisations to solve a real business challenge. In teams, you will apply what you have learned and present your work to the company.

Teaching and learning

You’ll learn from academics who are experts in the fields of accounting and finance. Your learning experience will be enriched by the research activities and collaborations of academic staff.

We will also offer a wide range of opportunities for personal development. These will be delivered by specialists in our Careers Service, Academic Skills Centre and Library, or in partnership with the Students’ Union.

All units are taught on campus.

You will experience a variety of teaching methods including:

Methods of assessment

Units are assessed by a combination of formal examinations and coursework.

Additional costs

As well as the cost of books, you will also need to cover the cost of photocopying, printing and binding. You should budget at least £100 for this.

Some courses involve visits away from the University campus, and you may be required to pay some or all of the costs of travel, accommodation and subsistence for such trips.

This course is regulated by the Higher Education Funding Council for England.

Entry requirements

UK students

2:1 or above (or its international equivalent) undergraduate degree in a subject with high mathematical or quantitative content.

Type of degree

You should have at least a 2:1 in a subject with high mathematical or quantitative content. Such subjects include engineering, mathematics, economics and physics. We may consider other subjects if they have enough quantitative content.

If you are a UK student and completed your undergraduate degree abroad, your qualification must be equivalent to a 2:1 or above.

English language

If English is not your first language, you will need to pass an English language test.

You will need an International English Language Test System (IELTS) score of at least 6.5 overall. Your scores for reading, writing, listening and speaking must be at least 6.0.

These results must be no more than two years old from the start date of your MSc course.

IELTS alternatives

We also accept other language tests, including PTE Academic, TOEFL. iBT, CPE and CAE.

If you have already taken a test but have not met the required standard, you can apply to take a pre-sessional course at the University.

If you are already studying in the UK

If you completed all of your undergraduate studies in:

  • the UK
  • a country where English is the official first language

You may be exempt from our English language requirements.

Combined offer

If you have an overall IELTS score of 6.0 or 5.5 you may qualify for a combined offer.

  • Five-week course: An overall IELTS score of 6.0 may allow you to take a five-week English course before your MSc. Each of your listening, reading, writing and speaking scores must be at least 5.5.
  • Ten-week course: An overall IELTS score of 5.5 may allow you to take a ten-week course before your MSc. Each of your listening, reading, writing and speaking scores must be at least 5.5.
