This MSc is designed to give clinicians a deeper understanding of sports medicine, sports injuries and exercise medicine. The programme covers the evidence-based management of sports medicine and musculoskeletal injuries and emphasises the vital role of physical activity in the prevention and treatment of chronic disease. This MSc can be taken full-time or part-time as a campus-based student, or via a flexible modular route with distance learning.
About this degree
The programme focuses on the prevention and treatment of sports injuries in particular. It will also provide a thorough grounding in functional anatomy and biomechanics, exercise physiology and psychology, as well as the fundamentals of exercise in maintaining and improving health. Students develop essential research skills through an independent research project.
All students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.
The MSc programme consists of 8 taught modules (7 core and 1 optional, 120 credits) and a research project (60 credits). Upon successful completion of 180 credits, you will be awarded the MSc. The PG Dip consists of 8 taught modules (7 core and 1 optional, 120 credits). Upon successful completion of 120 credits, you will be awarded a PG Dip in Sports Medicine, Exercise and Health.
A Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits, full-time nine months) is offered.
Upon successful completion of 180 credits, you will be awarded an MSc in Sports Medicine, Exercise and Health. Upon successful completion of 120 credits, you will be awarded a PG Dip in Sports Medicine, Exercise and Health.

All MSc students undertake an independent research project from a diverse range of available topics, which culminates in a dissertation, an oral examination and a presentation.
Teaching and learning
You will learn through a combination of formal lectures, hands-on practical sessions, small group seminars, exercise lab sessions, and clinics where your contribution through discussion is a vital part of the learning process. Your teaching faculty are all highly experienced doctors and physiotherapists working in NHS and elite sports and exercise medicine settings and your lecturers are national and international experts in their own fields. All will emphasise evidence-based practice. Assessment is through written examination, presentations, coursework and Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), as well as the dissertation and viva voce (oral) examination.
The core textbooks for all modules are available in the UCL Libraries and journal articles in your reading lists are also mostly available electronically from E-resources @ UCL. Students may be required to print and bind two copies of their Research project at approximately £25-£50.
Some students like to purchase their own textbooks or print course documents and we suggest allowing approximately £200 per year for this.
All students are required to pay for their DBS check if required for your programme or placement if relevant.
In addition, students will be required to pay for their travel costs to teaching, work placements or project locations.
As a graduate of the programme, you will have a deep understanding of sports injury prevention and management, and of exercise prescription for health across a range of medical conditions. This will prepare you for potential work in many areas from elite sports medicine to NHS sports and musculoskeletal injury clinics and exercise medicine services.
An MSc or PgDip in Sports Medicine, Exercise & Health from UCL will open many doors for you in the sports and exercise medicine world: from running a sports injury clinic to developing exercise medicine programmes for the prevention and treatment of chronic disease to working as a medic for a sports team or an event. Recent graduates have been employed by professional sports teams and national sports governing bodies, whilst others have continued their professional training by joining Higher Specialist Training schemes in Sport and Exercise Medicine.
