MSc Quantity Surveying


This is a fast-track conversion course for graduates from disciplines unrelated to construction and real estate, which leads to Chartered Surveyor status.

This course develops the contract and cost management skills needed to become a quantity surveyor, a role that sits in the heart of the construction process. You will learn about the various procurement options available in the UK and overseas, and develop approaches that seek to maximise client value while reducing the cost of a construction project.

The course offers:

  • the MSc course is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).
  • the chance to go on an international field trip, included in your fees. Recent destinations have included Frankfurt and Prague.
  • part-time, full-time and CPD study options are available.
  • there are opportunities to work with a mentor from industry.
  • the opportunity to undertake work placements and an internship as part of your studies.

What you'll study

The course has a cost, contract management, and procurement focus, making it particularly appropriate to applicants wishing to gain a stronger insight into these aspects of the cost management and construction business.

Graduates will be equipped with a blend of knowledge, understanding, skills, qualities and attributes that will enable them to pursue and develop careers in Quantity Surveying on an international level.

Dissertation, Consultancy Project or Internship?

You have the option to choose a dissertation, a consultancy project or a professional internship for your major project module. The internship is a month working for a company.

Internships are subject to availability and can be taken in the UK or abroad. You will be required to complete a project during your internship and produce a report.

Mentor scheme

We offer the opportunity for students to have an industry mentor, often an NTU alumnus. The mentors share their professional experience and expertise, offering advice and direction. These relationships have led to work experience, internships and employment.

How you’re taught

A range of methods for teaching and learning are used within the courses. These include a balanced mix of contact and distance learning study activities ranging from:

  • lectures
  • interactive seminars
  • student presentations
  • group-based projects and exercises to directed and self-directed research.

Field trip

Students will also have the opportunity to take part in an international residential field trip. The week-long trip, part of the innovative Professional Practice Module, provides a crucial international dimension to postgraduate study and is a key aspect of the development of students’ employability.


A variety of assessment methods are utilised including:

  • project work (individual and group based)
  • independent written assignments and reports
  • research proposal and dissertation
  • seen and unseen written tests and examinations
  • oral presentations
  • poster presentations.
