Program Description

MSc Multidisciplinary Economics

Utrecht University

From upheavals in the housing markets and top-level banking bonuses to rising taxes and the international credit crisis, economics is no longer a straightforward matter of money and finance. Economics today is a multifaceted discipline that impacts global politics, laws, and society – and Utrecht University School of Economics (U.S.E.) believes that today’s students must be equipped with more than subject knowledge.

Our two-year Research Master’s degree in Multidisciplinary Economics was carefully designed to give you the specialised knowledge and expertise you need for a career in economics. Moreover, the multidisciplinary context will encourage you to look at complex economics issues from different perspectives and help you to apply that knowledge in academia, industry or government.

U.S.E. provides you with a flexible, and comprehensive Master’s programme. The curriculum combines compulsory courses, designed to give you a solid foundation in economics, with your secondary discipline and elective courses, during which you can focus on your personal areas of interest. You will work closely with your fellow students on projects, courses, events and research.

Outline of the programme

In your first year, you will gain the solid theoretical basis necessary to conduct economic research and analysis. During the second year, you will complete a series of specialised courses to further hone your research skills at U.S.E. and the University of Groningen. You will attend research seminars by national and international researchers, take elective courses, write a research proposal for the NWO (Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research), and finish the programme by writing your own Master thesis.

The MSc in Multidisciplinary Economics is a comprehensive and versatile degree that prepares you well for a range of careers in economics, business economics, or finance in either the public or private sector. As a Research Master’s degree, it is also an excellent starting point for a PhD.

The MSc in Multidisciplinary Economics gives you a unique qualification, which will enable you to work at a high level in a variety of economics-related fields. Over two years you will:

  • receive training in economic research and analysis from top researchers at U.S.E.;
  • gain a sound knowledge of quantitative methods, microeconomics and macroeconomics, finance and financial markets, international and public economics, labour economics, and organisational economics;
  • get involved in research projects conducted by the Tjalling C. Koopmans Institute (TKI) research institute at U.S.E.;
  • pursue your own research interests;
  • explore economics in relation to a secondary discipline selected from history, geography, law, or social sciences; and
  • broaden your understanding of the impact of institutional, historical, and spatial dimensions on economics.
