The area of Biotechnology and Bioengineering has had extraordinary scientific advances since the end of the twentieth century, particularly in Protein Engineering, Stem Cell Biology, Systems Biology, Synthetic Biology, Genomics, Bioinformatics and Nanobiotechnology. Biotechnology, which is the integration of Life Sciences with Engineering, is envisaged as an area of great scientific and technological revolution in this century and has to be accompanied by a strong strategic vision of university education, as a source of knowledge and innovation, through advanced training of specialists in science, technology and engineering, able to translate the scientific and technological advances to the productive sector in an environment of sustainable humanity and improvement of their quality of life.
This training, given by the University of Minho, is provided by the Department of Biological Engineering (DEB) and benefits from strong ties of this department to the Center of Biological Engineering, a research center of excellence with high national and international reputation in the field of Biotechnology and Bioengineering and strong connection to the Portuguese business community.
The Master in Biotechnology is intended for students with background training on engineering or life sciences and aims to promote training geared to problem solving connected to the industries that incorporate biological processes as well as in the sector of services to those industries and development of biotechnology applications in healthcare.
